Note from Carolyn:
My fellow AC Members and SWW Subscribers:
When we begin to write, some of the joys of writing are unforeseeable. We probably already know it makes us happy to squiggle on yellow pads or tap out tomes on a keyboard. We sense we have stories to tell that we absolutely must share with others or, if we're bent on journalism, that we must report the tales and trials of others. We may envision feeling glorious when our byline appears, may even hope for headlines. But rarely do we foresee the opportunity to teach.
Teaching is one of my greatest joys. I love teaching my own classes at UCLA Extension Writers' Program and my seminars and workshops at writers' conferences. Yes, and webinars, teleseminars and even radio. But I also love being a guest speaker for other teachers' courses.
I will be guesting for Eve LaSalle Caram, the winner of UCLA's teacher of the year award, again on Monday. This may be the 5th or 6th time I've done this for her. Eve was my first teacher in the art of writing novels and has turned into one of my most rewarding friends. When I fill the guest spot for her class, we drive to campus together, have lunch, talk about writing and she brings me up-to-date on the talents and trials of her new (this quarter's) crop of students. Who would have guessed, back then when I decided to write the novel that had been gestating in my soul for four decades . . . sigh! . . . that such a friendship (and opportunity) would be among the perks.
So, I urge writers to take classes and extend the relationships they make with their fellow students. But I also encourage them to explore long-term relationships with their teachers. And later, I hope they'll try passing their love of writing forward. There are all kinds of ways to do it. The ones I mentioned above, of course. But also writing how-to books, editing, leading critique groups. I hope each of you, my subscribers, will think of at least one new way you might help another writer and, in the process, increase your own delight in writing.
Oh, by the way, Eve often teaches Fiction 1, Novel 1, Novel II and other classes for UCLA Extension. If you would like to know more about the program--both online and on campus--request a UCLA Writers' Program Quarterly from Marcus Hennessey at writers@uclaextension.edu .
Happy, happy writing and promoting!

TIP: About www.BookTour.com from Jewel Sample, author of Flying Hugs and Kisses”, and
"Besos y abrazos al aire" Spanish edition and
"Flying Hugs and Kisses Activity Book:
"BookTour.com is a free online service that connects authors and potential audiences of all sorts, from book groups to civic organizations, from bookstores to corporate events. Authors create their own page (biography, books, tour dates and availability) and any group looking for speakers can find them and contact them directly to arrange for an appearance. Relevant information for both authors and venues can be added in minutes through a simple fill-in-the-blanks interface. Connecting authors with potential audiences then becomes as easy as searching (by geography, book titles, subject, dates of availability) and sending an email.
How do you get started? Just copy and paste this link:
http://booktour.com/authorsignup?referrer=2778
When you get there be sure and check out my author's page!
----
Editor's Note: What I like about it is that anyone who signs up gets periodic (not too often) e-mail notice of book events in their area. That way readers (you know some of them do buy books!) will know where to find you if your event is in their neighborhood.
=======================================================
A general marketing rule is that a product must be seen seven times before it is purchased. That is just as true for books (because they are products, like it or not!). Let people see that book cover image! So, you are invited to advertise as a site sponsor at www.howtodoitfrugally.com. for a year at the same price many sites frequented by readers and writers charge for a month. Yep, the frugal way! Click on the Advertising tab at the top of the page or contact me personally at hojonews@aol.com.

In the News:
From the time of Esperanto -- maybe before, we've all known that we could if we were so disposed, make up a language. Then came Tolkien, then Star Wars, and then the movie The Interpreter with Nicole Kidman that utilized a made-up African Language called Ku. Now we have the Web. There you'll find www.langmaker.com where more than 1,000 language inventors conglomerate to fool around with 1,902 new languages. I guess all languages were made-up at one time or another and we keep making them up as we go but these languages are more like instant oatmeal. They were made up fast! The language inventors call them "conlang," another made-up word meaning constructed languages.
All this (except for my opinion!) comes from Column 1 of the LA Times Friday, Aug. 24. Anyone interested in checking it or other Column 1 essays may go to www.latimes.com/columnone. There you'll find several translations of the original passage from Genesis "And the whole Earth was of one language, and of one speech" in different made-up languages including pictures of their scripts.

Feature
Writers, Yes, You Can!!
By Leora Skolkin-Smith
So many of us write risking the possibility that there won’t be an audience for our work. We face rejections which feel like there must be a conspiracy somewhere that has singled us out alone for hurt and disappointment. Comfort always comes when a good writing friend says: 'hey, it’s not just you with all those rejections, and you know what? Ask yourself this: what would you rather be doing? Whether the work is good or bad, recognized or unheard, it is still something you MUST do, like breathing and eating and loving.
When I wrote my novel, Edges, I wrote it published by a tiny literary press with an advertising budget of under $300. I remember crying because we could only afford to run one newspaper ad and hardly even pay for that. Since it was a small literary press, Barnes and Noble had it processed in their computer as “out of print” the very day it came out!
So what kept me going? I'm not entirely sure. But having friends like Carolyn around and others, teaching me how to get the word out about my book through a multitude of ways, to keep fighting for it was critical. Eight years of work couldn’t be so easily vanished or vanquished. I grew determined with their kind support. I persevered and finally, after months, got some excellent critical attention. What happened next was an even greater surprise, the most unexpected of all. And I hope it will inspire every writer who ever believed they couldn’t make it through the merciless ocean waves this industry challenges us with, riding on only a rubber float but carrying the priceless literary cargo of our dreams and sweat. My novel has just been developed into a feature film. Here’s the link to the article for more information about that miracle, and landing and mooring which I hope will help other believe it can happen for them, too: http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/

Web Advice from WebforAuthors.com Expert Marshall Turner
Metadata Update 2
A few weeks ago I promised an update on our attempt to have an author’s website show up in Google when someone misspells her name. Although we added the common spelling to the keyword and description metadata tags, Google seemed to ignore this data. We next added her name and her misspelled name in the footer of each page of her website, in small type so it would be less obvious. In a few weeks we were able to Google and find her with the misspelling. However, her website is showing on page 3 of the Google search. I think we could get a higher ranking if we incorporated the misspelling more into the content of the site, but she does not want to highlight the misspelling. I think this is a good lesson that content is what search engines are looking for when they index your website.
