Note from Carolyn:
Dear Authors' Coalition Members and SWW Subscribers;
It's October again. Time for ghosts and cute pumpy faces. And Writer's Digest's newsletter nominations. If you enjoy "Sharing with Writers" please nominate it for their 101 Best Newsletters for Writers. We (and that isn't the royal "we" for it includes YOU for sure!) could get so much more sharing going if more people knew about us. We aren't big, we aren't old. So it would take a huge outpouring from subscribers to make a dent. Send an e-mail to writersdig@fwpubs.com with subject line, "101 Best Newsletters for Authors" and let them know what this newsletter does for you!
Without you, this newsletter is nothing. Truly.
Happy, happy writing and promoting and, yes, EDITING, too.

A Rant
An Answer to My Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies Pal
By Carolyn Howard-Johnson
In today's issue (Oct. 3) of the Glendale News-Press, June Casagrande, "A Word, Please" columnist, noted the sad (or not-so sad) loss of the hyphen due to the influence of the Web. Technology has thrust all manner of bad grammar habits onto those who love correct English. Many of these habits are enumerated in The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success. Some are worried that the hyphen may go extinct! Well, I for one will cheer.
As June--who is also the author of Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies notes-- the Brits don't agree with Americans on some points of hyphen-using anyway. Worse the style guides can't agree and the dictionaries don't either.
But the Net is promulgating worse than just this distressing disappearing-hyphen syndrome. It has encouraged us to push all kinds of words together. That comes from what I call the "domain name influence." Or domainnameinfluence, if you will. Book or bookcover? Bookfair or book fair. Backmatter or back matter? Hard copy or hardcopy? You get the idea. Click here for the rest of the rant including one mistake you won't want to make in your query letter at www.SharingwithWriters.blogspot.com.

And now there's a free e-book on the topic: Book Promotion and The Art of Presentation: From Online Chat Rooms to Live Speeches by Kathe Gogolewski. It's available for all registrants for the 2007 Muse Online Conference (see more under Carolyn's appearances in this newsletter). After the conference, it will be available at www.tri-studio.com on the Writers' Resource page as a free download. Learn tips for presenting in online chatrooms, and on radio and television. Carolyn Howard-Johnson offers sage advice in the section on television appearances based on her personal experience.

Carolyn will teach a new seminar on the UCLA campus on March 22, 2008, room 1323 Public Service Building. It's called The Business of Writing: Carve Your Career with Great Queries and Covers. Here's the class description: "You've written your story, your poem, your book. What now? You've tackled your craft like a professional but when it comes to introducing yourself to the decision makers—the marketing and editing part of your work—you may show a lack of expertise with seemingly innocuous departures from accepted procedures. Like using a cover letter when you need a query. In this one-day seminar, the students will use basics taught in the class to critique drafts of letters they have brought with them. In the process you'll get grammar, punctuation, and even computer editing tricks you may apply to your other writing as well as your queries. You'll receive a handout of the does and don'ts for approaching gatekeepers straight from the mouths of agents who contributed ideas on the subject for the instructor's book on editing and samples of letters that have produced results. Participants will not only walk away with two letters they can be proud to send out, but also have a low-cost plan for using them effectively in a variety of ways." So, are you all planning to come to spend a weekend in the sunshine in LA and make it a business expense? (-:

In the News: Remember a couple of months ago when I reported in this newsletter on the concept of longtail? The LA Times today (Oct. 2) reports on a perfect example of that in their Calendar section. Except that the author/publisher they feature is making big numbers, not lots of super tiny ones. Colleen Dunn Bates of Pasadena, published Hometown Pasadena in her den. It has sold 10,000 copies! She's now branching out to other cities like Santa Monica. The secret? A niche book with something in it others don't have (not just another Fodor's this book!). And a niche market (many towns like Pasadena are proud and insular). And she promotes with passion.
=======================================================
A general marketing rule is that a product must be seen seven times before it is purchased. That is just as true for books (because they are products, like it or not!). Let people see that book cover image! So, you are invited to advertise as a site sponsor at www.howtodoitfrugally.com. for a year at the same price many sites frequented by readers and writers charge for a month. Yep, the frugal way! Click on the Advertising tab at the top of the page or contact me personally at hojonews@aol.com.

Q&A A La Ann Landers
Tagging Books and Voting for Reviews on Amazon
(Note: This will be more easily read because the graphics will show up if you read it on my plog at Amazon. The URL is http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A3JH18T58CY65P/002-3692730-7456014 .)
Dear Carolyn: I look forward to reading your book. Could you clue me in about how you tag a book on Amazon, and also how you vote for reviews?
I would appreciate any Amazon insight you could provide.
Thanks, Susan
From CHJ: Funny. I plan to write a book on this soon. On all the Amazon stuff. In the meantime, some quick answers: You can vote on all the reviews on Amazon, not just the professional ones. Details on how to do that below. And you'll find lots of info on the perks Amazon offers for targeting promotion for you book in The Frugal Book Promoter.
Now, here's how you tag a book. You go to a book's individual page. Mine is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0978515870/ref=cm_arms_pdp_dp/104-4997450-6971141. It is the page you actually order on. Then you scroll down. For the tag section you'll see something like this one taken from my page and you can add your tags in the window provided:

To vote for reviews, you scroll farther down to the reviews where you can add comments about a review or click on the buttons, yes or no. It's a great way to support reviewers. These appear just under each review and look like this: Comment | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this).
You can also vote for Listmanias, So You'd Like Tos. There is much more on that in The Frugal Book Promoter. Some say the chapter on Amazon is worth the price of the book. (-:

Editing/Writing Tip: Most of us don't hire an editor to lend an extra pair of eyes to our query or cover letters. In fact, we often don't have time to run them by a writing partner. Yet these documents are among your most important because they are probably your first introduction to agents, contest judges, publishers, editors, producers and others. I cover this topic thoroughly in The Frugal Editor but in the meantime, please avoid mentioning that you "always wanted to write." TFE will tell you why. (-:

Web Advice from WebforAuthors.com Expert Marshall Turner
Web Analysis 1
So what do you look for now that you have a way to view and analyze the activity on you website?
Don’t look at “hits.” Hits can be misleading because viewing a single web page can results in many hits. Why? Each element of a web page is a hit. Since a web page is typically composed of many images as well as content, each counts as a hit. A better measure is the “unique” statistics. How many unique visitors did you have? How many pages did they view on average?
