Note from Carolyn:

Dear Authors' Coalition Members and SWW Subscribers;

I keep talking about finding the angles in your work because it seems to be a hard concept for the authors I consult with to grasp. So, here's an example from today's paper.

An article on page E17 of the Calendar section of the LA Times today (Friday Oct. 26th) features Heather McElhatton's Pretty Little Mistakes, her new novel going into its seventh printing with 50,000 books in print. It is a book with many endings (150 to be exact) and that is being touted as something brand new. Writing with hypertext (which is using links on the web to let people choose the path they want to go in fiction or other writing) was being taught in about 2002 when I was attending Summer Literary Semester at Herzen University in St. Petersburg, RU. That it is not new is less important than that many have not heard about it.

The point here is that we have to find an angle if we want to be featured in the LA Times. Or anywhere else for that matter. The Times tells us that this book also contains a sex scene with monkeys (no other details given). That couldn't be hurting its sales and that would be another angle to get more features in magazines and sites that cater to those looking for something erotic.

Mind you, I'm not advocating that you write what you think will sell. Especially if it goes against your principal to do so. You may if you wish, but I prefer being true to ourselves as writers. No. What I'm advocating is that you find the angles that are in your book(s) and pitch those angles to editors to get publicity. An angle can be anything. It can be tied to current events or something popular like sex or religion.

McElhatton's book is an example. Her publicity tied to a new art form that isn't exactly new but apparently the reporter at Associated Press (it was a wire story) didn't know that. It's new enough for him not to know.

I haven't had much these days, but I am revisiting publicity on my novel This Is the Place because it is set in Utah and features some polygamy. That's of interest right now because Mitt Romney (a Mormon who calls Utah his Zion) is running for President. Because Big Love (a serial set among members of a fundamentalist sect in Utah) has been popular on HBO and Warren Jeffs, a polygamist sect's prophet, was just convicted in Utah courts.

This is not all self - serving. I believe This Is the Place will help those who don't understand Utah's culture and politics. Help them to make better political choices, to understand history of the West better, etc. I say this so that you will understand that great PR isn't only about finding angles. It's also - - in its ideal form - - about writing from the heart and then trusting that what you do will be of interest. It is your job to help people find out why they might be interested and that includes Associated Press reporters and LA Times editors.

Happy, happy writing and promoting and, yes, EDITING, too.

Letters - to - the - Editor

Hi, Carolyn:

Here's a follow - up to your note about B&N in current newsletter. BN.com will NOT put ANY book published by Amazon or BookSurge on its site. The e - mail I got is that Amazon is a competitor to BN.com. Yep, you read that right.

In addition, B&N chain is NOT taking POD titles. But, there's an exception - - It requires that POD titles be available ONLY at Lightning Source for inclusion in B&N database.

Considering that BN.com is getting beaten badly by amazon.com, it seems counterproductive to refuse to take ANY title that might have ANY potential for sales.

Just my experience.

Walter Brasch, author Sinking the Ship of State: The Presidency of George W. Bush
www.walterbrasch.com

Ed. Note: Walt faxed me the letter he referred to. I received a similar one back in 2001. I had hoped that by now B&N would have figured out that content and salability are more important than the press a book is printed on or its publisher. The letter feels condescending. Further it is not across - the - board true. I know that The Frugal Book Promoter (printed on a digital press) is carried in Barnes and Noble near UCLA, as an example. And on B&N online. On the other hand, it IS wholesaled only by Ingram through Lightening source so that fits with the parameters that Walt mentioned. Nevertheless, the official stance from headquarters is a tad different from the actual policies of some individual B&N store buyers. Still, what Walt is sharing with us is important. We all know that attitudes trickle down from the top, so the official stance of B&N's administration is sure to affect all their book buyers to one degree or another and, by extension, all of us as well.

Q&A a la Ann Landers

More on the Subject of B&N, the Chain We Love to Hate, and Sometimes Hate to Love

Q: Did you happen to ask Linda Keller, the Community Relations Manager with the Dayton, OH Barnes & Noble what percentage her store expects from the sale of books featured in her store? Locally [Lloyd lives in Louisiana], the B&N wants 55%. If this is what B&N stores expect, I might just as well give the 1,100 books that I still have in my spare bedroom away!

Even the local Books - A - Million wants 50%. I didn't write my book to make money but to almost give it away isn't something I relish either. No wonder little guys like me have trouble marketing our books . . .

Lloyd King, author of To 'Nam with Love, a book of poetry

Dear Lloyd:

I can't speak to any specific B&N location but generally stores want 40%. That's what I've been asked for, at least, and that seems to be the norm. Considering retailing in general, this is a low percent; that's why bookstores also get to return their books. That 55% figure appears to be Amazon's requirement and some other online stores.

Having said that, this is not so much a problem involving the bookstores' markup (they, after all, have high overhead and must make a profit to exist!). This is a problem that many self - and subsidy authors make: They don't mark their books up enough to cover the costs of doing business. You know, like a promotion budget, discounts for distributors and for wholesalers and, yes, for their own profit.

Printing books on a digital press (POD) makes it more difficult to be competitive because books printed that way cost more and so it is harder to mark up enough to accommodate these costs and still compete with books that are self - or subsidy - or traditional - published in large quantities on an offset press. Printing on an offset press costs less and less per book as the runs (number of books) increase in size. Books printed in huge quantities in China can cost so little that even with all of the chunks taken by the sales pipeline, the publishers make a hefty profit per book.

So, what do you do if you are already published and your profit margin and retail costs are skewed against you? To learn more about fighting these odds, see the rest of this article at www.SharingwithWriters.blogspot.com.

Time is short! Watch for the first - ever AllMarketing Edition of Sharing with Writers. Marketing includes selling your book to an agent or publisher, selling your book after it is published to individual readers and to alternative venues like the military and catalogs. If you have a marketing tip, send it to HoJoNews@aol.com with "SWW TIP" in the subject line.
======================================================

Tip: Make yourself into an expert. Yes, even fiction writers. Are you an expert on the place where your novel is set? I am an expert on Utah's culture as an example because I was raised with one foot in each of the divided cultures in that state. Are you an expert on the profession of your protagonist? This is an easier process for writers of most nonfiction but it still requires some work. Send out quizzes on your subject or white papers or articles. Post them on your website. Do what you can to improve your credentials including teaching, reading, and taking classes.

Sharing: From Leora Krygier, author of When She Sleeps, www.leorakrygier.com, "Fiction writers take heart! Last weekend, I brought a box full of books to Goodwill. After dragging the heavy box out of the trunk of my car and lugging it into the donation center, the man in charge summarily announced - "we only take novels." So, there I was, digging into the box, sorting out the novels from the textbooks and the nonfiction books. And although my aching back wasn't at all happy about having to lug half the books back to my car, especially when the man couldn't discern a novel from a pickle, somehow, the fiction writer in me was delighted."

A general marketing rule is that a product must be seen seven times before it is purchased. That is just as true for books (because they are products, like it or not!). Let people see that book cover image! So, you are invited to advertise as a site sponsor at www.howtodoitfrugally.com. for a year at the same price many sites frequented by readers and writers charge for a month. Yep, the frugal way! Click on the Advertising tab at the top of the page or contact me personally at hojonews@aol.com.
=======================================================

Tip: In order to know whether the editor assigned you by your publisher is great or only middling, you need to know a lot about editing yourself. Notice, I didn't say you had to have aced your English grammar class in high school. Many people who did that still know very little about editing. I suggest The Frugal Editor, of course, but there is also a complete list of suggestions in that book including, Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words: A Writer's Guide to Getting It Right, by Bill Bryson.

TIP: Do you read your contracts? You may be able to negotiate more participation on promotion with your publisher. I upped got one of my publishers to up the number of announcements/sell sheets they would send out to their contacts. It wasn't much but it was something. If your contract doesn't say they will promote, they probably won't. Ask. And if you don't work on this with them, please don't spread what a lousy publisher they are all over the web. They may deserve your ire in some ways but the responsibility is yours - - to be sure they do it or to plan on doing it yourself.

Like using a cover letter when you need a query. In this one - day seminar, the students will use basics taught in the class to critique drafts of letters they have brought with them. In the process you'll get grammar, punctuation, and even computer editing tricks you may apply to your other writing as well as your queries. You'll receive a handout of the does and don'ts for approaching gatekeepers straight from the mouths of agents who contributed ideas on the subject for the instructor's book on editing and samples of letters that have produced results. Participants will not only walk away with two letters they can be proud to send out, but also have a low - cost plan for using them effectively in a variety of ways." So, are you all planning to come to spend a weekend in the sunshine in LA and make it a business expense? ( - :
