Note from Carolyn:
Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:
In one of her newsletters, Patricia M. Terrell reminded me that Amazon now provides forums and discussion boards. I thought that the release of the Frugal Editor would be a good time to celebrate and start a discussion on all things editing using this nifty and author - friendly feature from Amazon. You'll find it here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0978515870?ie=UTF8&cdPage=1&newContentID=Tx1Q6JSPT9T0WQ9
Also, since I started my new blog at blogspot on the subject (www.thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com), I wanted ideas on what direction to take it.
Thus, I'd love for you to explore how this board on Amazon works. You'll find it on my book's page (any book's page!) just below the reviews. That can be quite a scroll if the author does an Amazon plog and has quite a few reviews, but keep scrolling. It looks like this:
Customer Discussions Beta (What's this?)

You created this discussion
The Frugal, Smart and Tune - In Editor
I have one tiny gripe. Some may find it difficult to figure out how to contribute to a particular thread. See the little arrow on the left of the link that says "The Frugal, Smart and Tuned - In Editor?" You click there to join that discussion. Not easy to see, huh?
Oh, and another little gripe. Once you've titled your thread, I see no way to go in and edit it. Ahem! You can edit your post but it looks like that typo in the title shall be there unto the end of the world.
Now, can I get you to go and add to the discussion? I'd like to know what you'd like to see from an editing blog. Feel free to share your editing war stories, too. Amazon and I are all ears. ( - : AND, include your URL. You do want people to know where to find you, right? And sign up for the RSS feed that will let you know when people have posted. Otherwise you might miss something you want, indeed NEED, to know.
Happy, happy writing and promoting and, yes, EDITING, too.

Q&A a la Ann Landers
On Editing: Let's Tidy Up Those Empty Spaces in Your Copy
Question: Carolyn, one of the most common editing mistakes I get from writers submitting work to [Dotsie Bregel's contests at National Association of Boomer Women, www.BoomerWomenSpeak.com] is the space after a sentence ending. Industry standards changed a few years ago and although it is an ongoing battle between the professors [academia] and publishing professionals, the standard is now ONE space before you begin the next sentence. I'm not referring to LINE spacing, but the space you put at the end of a sentence before you begin the next sentence. When we have had many fine entries and time is of the essence, the lack of proper formatting like this can be a deciding factor against a particular entry.
Care to comment on that? Do you see a lot of this? I know I do.
Georgia Richardson, a.k.a. Queen JJ, humorist for NABBW, National Assoc. of Boomer Women, www.queenjawjaw.com
Answer: Georgia, yes, these are formatting problems that editors, contest judges, and publishers struggle with. Unfortunately, many writers don't think that kind of editing and formatting is part of their business. Obviously, from what you say, it is. The reason that the double space rule at the end of the sentence changed is because kerning is handled differently than it once was. This delicate spacing between letters and sentences used to be done by the linotype operators who set the type; double spaces helped them make the type look nicer on the page. Now computers do all that adjusting of letter sizes and spacing for us. To adjust to the new typing pattern is really tough for those of us who learned to type . . . mmmmm, a thousand years ago. I included information on this in the Frugal Editor for writers who can't adjust, don't want to or just want to double check their spacing before they submit.
Here's how to do it: (Learn easy ways to use your computer to clean up your spacing before you submit anything by going to The Frugal, Smart, and Tuned - In Editor blog, www.thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com.)

More on Selling Books
(From Raff Ellis, author of Kisses from a Distance, Cune Press, www.raffellis.com)
I wanted to contribute some of my ideas about promotion. I'm more experienced now and have used some of my old marketing experience (I was VP of marketing for a computer services company in a former life). I have four lecture/signings set up at two local, rather large, libraries, one at a bookstore, and one at a Genealogical Society meeting. How I got those was persistent and hard work but once I had them, I made up postcard size flyers, all with the same information, except the date & place of course, and brought 100 to each location for handout. My hosts were surprised, as no one had done this before, and the last time I checked, they were all gone. Someone stopped me today to show me one of the cards, not knowing that I was the one who provided them to the library.
Here's my skinny. I know these aren't Harry Potter numbers but I've personally sold 283 autographed special edition hardcovers in the last three months in addition to those sold by Amazon and my publisher. I've also come up with some unique venues, e.g. a farmers market, a bowling alley, and a couple of churches.

Tip: Karen DeGroot Carter, author of One Sister's Song, a lyrical challenge to common assumptions about love, race, and respect (www.PearlStreetPublishing.com), sent along a letter from Lisa See, author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and Peony in Love. Lisa obviously worked out something with Dutton's, a Los Angeles area indie bookstore, to sign copies ordered from them. In return she used her list to suggest people order from them either online or with a toll free telephone number and she would sign and personalize their purchases. What a great way to cooperate with a bookstore that has been good to you. She also published her offer on her blog at www.sustenancescout.blogspot.com.

Web Advice from WebforAuthors.com Expert Marshall Turner
Selling Through Your Website 4
Shopping Carts
Here’s how shopping carts usually work. Visitors click on merchandise to put an item in the shopping cart. The shopping cart then allows the purchaser to enter
payment information (credit card). The payment information is sent to the
payment gateway that authorizes or denies the transaction. If authorized,
the payment is deposited into your merchant account which deposits to your
bank account. And to make the entire transaction secure, you website will
need a security certificate too.
What will this cost? More than you want to spend! Plus there are monthly
fees whether you process any transactions or not. Setup of a shopping cart
is complex and expensive. Only consider this after you have built up a good
business and have a lot of different things to sell.

Here's the class description: "You've written your story, your poem, your book. What now? You've tackled your craft like a professional but when it comes to introducing yourself to the decision makers—the marketing and editing part of your work—you may show a lack of expertise with seemingly innocuous departures from accepted procedures. Like using a cover letter when you need a query. In this one - day seminar, the students will use basics taught in the class to critique drafts of letters they have brought with them. In the process you'll get grammar, punctuation, and even computer editing tricks you may apply to your other writing as well as your queries. You'll receive a handout of the do’s and don'ts for approaching gatekeepers straight from the mouths of agents who contributed ideas on the subject for the instructor's book on editing and samples of letters that have produced results. Participants will not only walk away with two letters they can be proud to send out, but will also have a low - cost plan for using them effectively in a variety of ways."
