Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors' Coalition,

an organization of writers who help writers.

Note from Carolyn:

Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:

The Authors' Coalition website is now ready for you to look at - - with a critical eye. You may all know how I struggle with websites and I need you to look, tell me where my links are broken and generally give me ideas for improvement.

But I'm also excited about some of the things I'm doing and want you to participate when you can help me make it even more useful for writers. There are resources for writers. So, do you have a resource you'd like me to list?

There is a speakers' bureau. So, would you like to be there? Would you be willing to link to it from your site?

We're looking for sponsors. Do you know of any organization that would like to sponsor us? Any author? We give our sponsors lots more personal service than most sites that offer sponsorships.

What about an ad? And that catalog that will go out to booksellers this spring? And the slide show that works as a cross - promotion for those of you who speak. And the CD for getting info on your book out to people who read? Dig the neat crossword puzzle offering. Wouldn't that be cute in your newsletter (if you do a fancy HTML type) or on your website?

And what about the signing positions at the booths we sponsor? Coming up is the LA Times/UCLA Fair and the huge Veterans' Week in Branson, Missouri.

C'mon. Poke around. Let me know where you'd like to appear. Join if you haven't already. Renew if it's time. And last, check out the perks that paid members get under “Become a Member.” There is lots there for all levels of memberships, and more than ever before.

Find it at www.authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com.

Happy writing, promoting and, yes, editing, too!

Letters to the Editor

I'd just like to comment on something in your newsletter. About your tips on indexing: I never thought much about finding indexes in a novel! Still, it's extremely helpful when a novel has something like an index. You know what I mean? Something telling me how the words in strange languages are pronounced, what they mean, etc. These are so helpful and I wish more novelists used them, instead of letting readers out of the loop to drift cluelessly through the story!

Thanks again for a WONDERFUL resource for writers!! :

Take care and enjoy your day!

Q&A:

Fact or Fiction and Blogging

Question:
Carolyn, I wrote a piece of historical fiction that will soon be included in an anthology. I have started a blog, a blog that focuses on the main character in that anthology piece. How can I incorporate material about what is fact and what is fiction into my blog? From
Sue Chehrenegar,
Title of anthology
Through the Eyes of Love
Title of my story in anthology: "An American Candy Pleases Persian in New York City"
The web address for my blog: http://journals.aol.com/suecheh/a - century - of - thoughts

Answer:
Sue, I think this is a really fun question. It gives us a chance to put our promotional creative caps on.
I thought you might try to do a piece every day on your blog that includes a short excerpt from your book that has a fact in it or is based on something factual. Then addend a note that tells the reader what part of the excerpt is in fact, fact. Ha!
Of course, you'll have to carefully select the right stuff from your writing so your visitors find enough in an excerpt to interest them but keep it short enough so they won't mind reading it on a computer screen.
This kind of frequency would keep your blog current (very nearly daily!) without too much effort. Daily is good for blogs. So is "without too much effort." And this process would reveal enough about the book that it might intrigue blog - readers enough to buy your book. What a concept!

Subscribers who have websites or newsletters of their own may be interested in the Free Articles 4 Readers and Writers on my site, www.howtodoitfrugally.com. I try to add new articles to it each week. If you don't see what you need for your blog, or newsletter, just ask. HoJoNews@aol.com.
=====================================================

Tip: One of the secrets to book promotion is finding sites online that fit with the subject of your book (yes, even the subject of your fiction!) Sometimes it won't even be the site itself, but rather a forum they run. An example is the National Association of Baby Boomer Women that has an excellent forum dedicated to enlightening writers. It is moderated by subscriber Georgia Richardson. These sites may host forum guests, mention you in their newsletter and more. To learn more about NABBW go to www.nabbw.com

=====================================================
Fun and F r * *: If you purchased the Frugal Book Promoter or the Frugal Editor, I'd love for you to review it on Amazon or BN.com. Make it simple; just tell what part of it you found most valuable. If you do, send me the review link (URL) and I will send you a handout from one of my UCLA classes. As a thank you, of course. HoJoNews@aol.com

This is a new running feature for the poets among us and those who would like to try writing poetry but feel, well . . . inadequate. Please send in your poetry tips and resources for this section.

Contrary to the views of many, poetry can be promoted! Search your area for public service possibilities on TV cable channels and on NPR. KPFK in Southern California has a twice a month airing called Poets' Café and they really know how to spotlight a poet. www.kpfk.org.

A general marketing rule is that a product must be seen seven times before it is purchased. That is just as true for books (because they are products, like it or not!). Q&A a la Ann Landers:

Becoming Known as an Expert

Question: Publicist Mindy Phillips Lawrence asks:
I have a client who is an academic. Do you have any suggestions to help him with being viewed as an expert by the press and others in the publishing world?
Answer: You client's website should tout him as an expert in specific fields, areas of study, etc. Authors can do that by being sure that their awards are listed and that they have a media room and that they have a page that lists seminar and workshop topics. Check out my site and snoof (yes, I make up words!) around. I'm serious. I'd direct you to one page but I've used methods of doing this throughout the site. Endorsements. Places where I've already served as an expert. There's even a video so people who might use me can see that I'm full of information but also pretty casual. So your job is to analyze those things and see how they might apply to anyone who wants to position himself as an expert.

Tip from Karina Fabian, www.fabianspace.com: "In November, I followed up on some folks who had requested review copies of Infinite Space, Infinite God (www.isigsf.com) but who had not published reviews yet. Even though I’d sent some of the ARCs nearly a year earlier, I politely asked if they’d had a chance to review the book or if I’d missed their review. In some cases, reviews were written but not yet published; in some, folks had forgotten all about the book. As a result of my prompting, however, I got three more reviews—two in prominent magazines—by January.

Q&A

Trying to Talk to Amazon

Question:
Forgive the intrusion, but I have hit some turbulence on the mighty Amazon. My first children's book is now at Amazon: Al - the - Gator. The problem is I used the pen name "Doc Gator" for this one and need to somehow link it to my first book on Amazon.com, Passive Fear. I will also soon have a third book at Amazon Battleground University and want to have it so anyone checking out any of my books would be linked to each of the others. How can I do this?

Answer:
Doc Gater, you may want to contact Amazon through the pale blue contact box available on each book's page. The book connection thing you're talking bout is usually automatic with Amazon, but they're probably missing that because of the different names you use and different genres you write in. This contact process might take some doing - - some watching, some repeats. You may have to contact them on all three of your pages, but I'd try just one to begin with; in the note you send them be sure to include the URLs of all three pages that you want connected, plus your profile page (you are doing an Amazon Profile, aren't you? )

If you're not using the profile page and the plog/blog that Amazon offers, you probably need to get my book The Frugal Book Promoter and check out the chapter dedicated to some basic promotional perks offered by Amazon - - but don't tell them you're using them for promotional purposes ( - : They don't like that. Even though much of what they've set up is aimed directly at increasing their own sales!

And do be very careful to read the guidelines for each of the things they offer and follow them meticulously.

That pale blue contact box I'm talking about is labeled Feedback. You'd probably want to use the third click - through option. This is what it looks like.

And, you're right. You should have those books connected on the pages. You'll not find a lot of crossover between genres but you will find some. Plus having written more than one book and having that apparent on your pages gives you a little extra credibility among readers.

Are you utilizing the Amazon Friend offering to help with this spill over of interest from one book to another? Again, The Frugal Book Promoter will help with this.

She'll teach you to make promotional booklets work for you with a variety of programs. http://www.kickstartcart.com/app/?af=696843
=======================================================

SCAM: Some authors are getting phone calls from someone who says he promotes books. The person who does this is personable, knows a little about your book, seems to think it would make a great movie and asks for a copy of the book and gives the author his address. Of course he has contacts in mind (realtors always have buyers for you when they call, too!) who are very likely to like it. He also tells the author that he has just sold another book to someone in the industry for a lot of money. He doesn't tell the author he wants money or is selling his services first. He starts out with a request for a small amount but ups the amount with later requests a bit and then that figure soars with each of his expenses. The author who reported this scam suggests that you don't do anything without checking around with references, etc.

You can start a social community of your own. This works best for authors who write for a niche group. A service that seems to work well for many is ning.com. Here's the class description: "You've written your story, your poem, your book. What now? You've tackled your craft like a professional but when it comes to introducing yourself to the decision makers—the marketing and editing part of your work—you may show a lack of expertise with seemingly innocuous departures from accepted procedures - like using a cover letter when you need a query. In this one - day seminar, the students will use basics taught in the class to critique drafts of letters they have brought with them. In the process you'll get grammar, punctuation, and even computer editing tricks you may apply to your other writing as well as your queries. You'll receive a handout of the do’s and don'ts for approaching gatekeepers straight from the mouths of agents who contributed ideas on the subject for the instructor's book on editing and samples of letters that have produced results. Participants will not only walk away with two letters they can be proud to send out, but will also have a low - cost plan for using them effectively in a variety of ways."
