Hi Carolyn,

I just read a warning from one of my Yahoo writers' groups about a new organization service, called Grouply. It targets Yahoo groups with the promise of organizing all your groups using one account. It's supposed to save time and prevent the overflow of Yahoo group messages in your inbox.

Users sign over all their account information, including names and passwords. Grouply changes your primary email notification to their account.

Here's the reason for screaming sirens: Grouply states that all content posted will be used at their discretion.

Two huge problems: One, your work (and all information in the groups' archives and other files) could be accessed by a Grouply member and posted to their account. Then, Grouply has access to your work.

The second is a tool that gives Grouply members access to private groups, even without a membership. Grouply members have the ability to click on members with similar interests and gain access to those otherwise private groups. Let's not think about what we would do in a private group. This unlimited access gives any Grouply member all the content in those groups, which could be used by Grouply.

I'm all for organization and saving time, but I'm happy one of my Yahoo groups has decided to ban any Grouply members. I want to know who has access to my content, whether it involves simple posts or my freelance work.

I wanted you and your readers to take note of the consequences of this new "service."
