Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:
Are any of you on Twitter.com? I'm writing a chapter for another of the HowToDoItFrugally series of books for writers. It is on social networking. Twitter is my favorite for busy authors. So, I thought I'd start by doing a special Twitter issue of Sharing with Writers. You supply the tips. I, of course, include your book's title, your website URL and your Twitter address. ( - : We all win that way. And we might talk lots of you into joining us on Twitter. Where the first and most important rule - - at least for people who aren't there just to play but to network - - is include content in every tweet. That means, resources. The addresses of other tweeters who supply some content rather than just chit - chat. And, yes! Tips.
So, wanna play with me? In the meantime, go on over and check out my Twitter page. It's www.twitter.com/frugalbookpromo.
Happy promoting! And yes, writing and editing, too!
Carolyn Howard - Johnson
PS: I'm going on vacation again. Yes, I am. No apologies. Thrilled! So, no newsletter next week. Hold your news until maybe November 6th. But do send it then. Use your computer calendar's trigger to remind you.
PSS: Mindy and I had all kinds of tech problems. Please be patient with my boo - boos. ( - :

Letter to the Editor
Hi Carolyn:
Many anthologies are offered to authors these days. Some anthologies offered from and for "best selling authors" are getting to be so common place that I believe that writers need to at least be warned that these books are not normally going to get in a bookstore and are best just as product for back of room sales. The publishers don't screen any of the writers/authors. Anyone can add their name to the book, thus becoming associated with other top authors by agreeing to "buy a small number of books (500) at a low, wholesale price." Legit publishers and speakers bureaus don't look at these books as a credit to your name.
There is also a speaker's bureau in Tennessee which goes by a multitude of names that sends out emails announcing two to three speaking placements that pay around $5 - 10K. All the speaker has to do is pay a one time low fee to join the speaker's bureau. I have had clients who have paid the fee and never heard from them again.
Thought you'd want to have this information.
Many thanks. Keep on winning!
Always,
Cynthia Brian
Note from Carolyn: It is imperative that authors check thoroughly any opportunity or contest offered. As with the poetry "opportunities" discussed in past SWW issues, anthologies can be questionable. Or they can be good ways to network and be read. Weigh costs - - if any - - against benefits you might receive and how you personally might use the anthology.

Green Tip: When you ship your book, recycle boxes. You'll also want enclose a note that you are green, green, green! Just like Kermit. You want to do that for no other reason than you want the recipient to see that you're sending shabby boxes for a reason. When you must buy boxes or envelopes, buy them in just the right size. Oversize boxes with lots of packing say you aren't so green and you don't want anyone to think that, now, do you? Policies like these don't just save paper. They save gas. Your UPS truck can carry more boxes if they're smaller. The more boxes they carry on any given trip, the less gas they use overall.

Tip . . . . . . from Patrika Vaughn, your author's advocate (www.acappela.com): Realize that in the media world, there’s no such thing as off the record. So always assume that everything you say is on tape and will be put into print. Also, don’t ask the reporter to send you a copy of the story for your approval. While this may seem like a reasonable request, it will only offend a seasoned reporter. But do ask for a copy of the magazine to keep as a souvenir. This will show how pleased you are that the reporter has given you the opportunity to get quoted in the publication.

Humor Hint by Anne Louise . . . ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Lots of writers say to keep a pen and notebook handy in your purse, so that when you get a good idea, you can jot it down. I don’t know about you, but if I carried a notebook and pen in my purse, by the time I pulled it out of that cavernous pit, not only would my idea be gone, but so would my bus, my friends, and a good chunk of my day. What I do instead is say my idea out loud, in the hopes that this oral recitation process will help me remember it later, when I do have a pen and paper. It usually works, but I can get some awfully strange looks. You can imagine the reaction of the other grocery shoppers when I got this brainstorm, “Forget erotica - neurotica – that’s MY writing genre!”
May your keyboard never falter!

Feature
Adding Flavor to Your Fiction with Foreign Words
On one of my favorite YahooGroups for writers (wwww.wordfriends@yahoogroups.com), two of our members, PeeWee and French - speaking Brenda are talking about using French phrases in PeeWee's new novel. It made me think I should talk a bit about using foreign words in your writing but especially in ficiton. Some things you can do to make the process work well are:
1. Don't use so much of a foreign language that English speakers won't be able to easily translate (without your doing it for them which is kind of condescending).
2. With that in mind, you can judiciously place a French (or language of your choice! Ha!) within your English sentence, so that it can be intuited.
An example might be, if in English it would be logical for someone to swear at her antagonist and the author used French for the swear words instead of English, the reader would probably guess that the character gave her antagonist whatfor, though she might not be able to translate the exact words. The idea is for the reader to get the gist of what is being said, not necessarily be able to parrot back a word - for - word translation.
3. You can also be careful to use cognates (words that look and sound like English. It's easy with French because we borrowed so many of them from back in the days of the Norman conquest) so that English - speakers can intuit them.
4. You can also judiciously repeat a foreign word in context so that eventually the English reader sort of picks up on the meaning. Hosseini did this well in the Kite Runner with Pashtu (and maybe a couple of other languages, as I recall). Studying his methods is a great way to learn how to do it.
5. Another way to use a foreign word for a common one like "Goodbye." When the other person says, "Goodbye" in English the reader will know that is what the first person was saying. It's even easier for the reader if the English is spoken first, then the foreign language.
6. We can also use words that everyone probably knows anyway, even though they aren't cognates. Both French and Armenian use "merci" for thank you and English speakers know it, too. It doesn't take much of a foreign language to give your dialogue the flavor you're looking for.
And the most accepted way to format your foreign phrases or words is to use italics.
I know you've probably read books where the translation is done for you. That usually interrupts the forward motion of the story and the author may have chosen to do it that way because she simply didn't know any other way. Now you do. Are there tips for using foreign languages in your copy I've missed? Please comment at www.thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com.

Editing Tip: Everyone's using LCD as if everyone knows what it means. David Pogue says it means "screen" so say "screen," unless you really mean to differentiate what you are saying from "screen." How many of us still even know that it means "liquid crystal display" and that still doesn't tell us it means "screen."

Editing Tip: Then there's PDA. Heck, I use it all the time! It stands for "personal digital assistant." Now, how high falutin' can we get. From now on, I' just calling it a palmtop. Though can't say that feels much better at least it isn't an acronym and it isn't pretentious.

=====================================================
Editing Tip: Here's one that isn't reserved just for the techies in the crowd. It's "price point." We used it all the time in retailing. I suppose its legitimate if you're describing a variable withint a group. Say a price point that covers the possiblities between twenty and fifty dollars. But mostly a price is a price is the price. No point in belaboring it.

An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing
Writing Words to Speak
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Mindy Phillips Lawrence
When I was in high school, I didn’t know how much I enjoyed speaking in front of others until I placed in the Voice of America speech contest. Normally shy around others, I changed the minute I got in front of an audience. I became a performer.
Now, many years later, I have that same desire to speak. This might be bravado or a nasty gene that came from some unknown ancestor, but I love public speaking. Even more than that, I love writing speeches.
Speech writing can open doors for scribes in several ways. Writing speeches unlocks a world of promotion for a writer’s work. It can also become a career in and of itself.
Someone wrote, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country,” the well - remembered line from JFK’s 1961 Inaugural address. Someone also wrote the unforgettable zing spouted by Governor Ann Richards at the 1988 Democratic National Convention in which she quipped about George H.W. Bush: "Poor George, he can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." Republican or Democrat, lines like those are priceless and come from the pen of a mighty fine speechwriter.
Below I’ve listed some links to get you started – or to keep you going – with writing speeches. If you’re good, it can become a full time career. If you are not interested in pushing it that far, speechwriting can be a great way of promoting your novel or nonfiction book before book buying audiences.
“Brevity is the best recommendation of speech, whether in a senator or an orator.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero

The fourth segment will be about nonfiction - - specifically my nonfiction - - on how it's helped my career and that of others and how something similar can work for yours.
Check out host Paul Bruno's website and enhance your career by getting connected with The Career Czar.”
