I also tell writers to be patient with other writers when they make editing boo - boos. We're all human, this letter comes out weekly and it's long!

Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:

We often say, "It's been one of those days." Well, for me it's been one of those weeks. I won't depress you with the details of my mother's death except to say I was called to Salt Lake City expecting to comfort her in illness and ended up planning a very simple funeral in three days. She was nearly 91 so I am only sad for her loss, not that she is at rest.

On the way home, the airport monitors reported on California's "Armageddon," which, gratefully, is not that bad unless one's home is in the thick of it. From our house, we only smell the smoke, collect the cinders on our cars and in the driveways.

Then, when I got home, my file for this newsletter was corrupted. You all know what a tech genius I am. When I "recovered" it, it was unintelligible to the likes of me. So, another minor loss. I especially hate having lost the thank yous I think are so important and with intervening events since I added them to this newsletter last week . . . well, it's not that I'm ungrateful for your support, but I just don't remember.

Oh, and the server on Authors' Coalition and my own website has been down for going on three weeks now. Don't you love it?

I am moving ahead, however, watching the tangerine tree in my front yard decorate itself in orange balls for the holiday season, grateful for the sun showing through the smoke.

I am also working with Christine Alexanians on the coming LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books and hope that anyone who is considering being there to sign will finalize their plans. Many of you know that the reason this booth is such a resounding success is that participants are all marketing oriented (or will be by the time they are trained and otherwise nagged to do their pre - event promotion which is part of the benefits of participating with us!). So, cross promotion for the booth is fantastic, and, of course our location is one of the best at the fair. It will be the last weekend in April, 2009, but the time to get on board is now. Contact Christine Alexanians at chalexwrite@yahoo.com. The best way to learn about the fair is to contact Christine personally using this e - mail address. She will even give you her phone number to talk in real time if you prefer.

We are flexible so what we call "signing positions" may be used as traditional signing events or to promote in other ways. One year, Authors' Coalition member Leora Krygier used her hour to test a new business creating card and book memories using photos supplied by her clients and her own amazing, poetic prose. She printed sample cards right in the booth, and, of course, benefited from the promotion done by her tablemates on both days of the fair.

So, please, contact Christine. This is her first year of planning the booth (I'm not going anywhere! Authors' Coalition is, after all, a coalition and Christine is pitching in for the good of all.) Our booth has always been a double one; because of the recession, we are cutting back to a single as a precaution. With early signing, we may be able to go back to a double again. So let's get moving!

I wanted to be a humor writer. Hence, wrote funny article. Cool! Sold funny article. Great! Didn’t get paid for funny article. Not funny. E - mailed editor of magazine who bought funny article. Uncomfortable. Got no response. Not cool. Panicked, thinking that my stuff was junk and who was I kidding and of course they’re not going to pay me for that tripe. Way not cool. Went old - fashioned and dialed the phone; spoke to someone. Scary and a pain in the posterior. Got paid. Totally cool! Learned that following up pays off better than panicking – they had changed editors and my invoice got lost in the shuffle. Maybe my stuff is funny after all. 

From My Junk Mail: In mail waiting for me when I returned was a subscription envelope that reminded me that it is important not to get stale. It has been many years since I took my degree in English literature and I had never heard of this journal because it is relatively new. It is AGNI, supported by Boston University, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. It was recently named among "the top 10" by The Boston Globe and Nobel poet Seamus Heaney says it is "a cracker of a magazine, a reader's delight, a standard achieved." It seemed to me that Sharing with Writers subscribers who want to reach for better writing skills should at least give it a look.
