I'm off on vacation. Seriously. My husband are being daring and going to Mexico. It's our good deed. They need tourists right now - - though we aren't exactly the biggest spenders in the world.

I love Mexico. I love practicing my Spanish - - sorely in need of it. The Mexicans love it when I try - - it's one of the beauties of the place.

Which brings me to my writing message of the day, I think. It's so important for each of us to mentor those with an interest in writing. Even when we run across someone with big ideas and little training, it's always possible to find a writing strength in their work. So I'm hoping while I'm gone, you'll find one newbie to encourage. And try not to miss me too much. ( - :

Tip from Jim Cox of Midwest Reviews: There are a couple of excellent how - to books available to the novice on how to turn a print book into a digital and/or audio publication. One such title is the "TurnKey Publisher's Audio Publishing Handbook" (9781933723150, $20.95). Once you have an audio book submit it to the APA (Audio Publisher Association) "Audie" awards contest. Winning in one of the various categories is a big PR boost when trying to market to libraries, to bookstore chains, and in direct sales through such venues as Amazon.com. The Audio Publisher Association's Web site details of both the contest and all the other benefits of the APA: www.audiopub.org. Of course, you can (and in my not - so - modest opinion should) always submit your audio book for review to my attention at the Midwest Book Review.

I notice that Rhona Byrne does a lot of rhyming in her prose on her Secrets CD. Sometimes the rhyme is internal. However it's used, a rhyme can make your work more memorable.

On Sunday Sept 20th, I officially launched my new book Creation Inspirations: A New View of the World Around You at my church. Though I purposely tried to be careful not to overdo the advertising I did because it was at church, I was actually a little disappointed at first at the low turnout. However, I soon realized that most of those who showed up did so because they intended not only to preview the book but to buy. Ultimately, that meant in looking at the guests to buyers ratio, it was quite a good day.

Next, shortly after I got home, I posted a note of thanks for the support on Facebook along with a few photos from the event. By Monday night, I had another handful of orders from people who had wanted to come but couldn’t! Would we have probably connected at church in the coming weeks? Likely, but being accessible on FB too made it quicker and easier. Overall, I was pleasantly reminded that success comes in many shapes and sizes and sometimes in unexpected places too.

Using Skype to Help Others and Reach Readers ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ By Barbara Techel

I had been giving thought to doing Virtual Visits with my dog Frankie, The Walk 'N' Roll Dog, for about a year now, and recently gave it much more serious thought. I am so glad I did! I found this wonderful website dedicated to just that, http://skypeanauthor.wetpaint.comhttp://skypeanauthor.wetpaint.com/page/Barbara+Techel. The site was started by Library Media Specialist, Laura Chauncey (see her video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAxmX - Ff3MA), who is located just outside of New York City.

This kind of promotion is really a win - win situation for both authors and teachers/librarians. It is a way for authors to share their books and their message in a cost effective way, as well as a great way for schools/libraries that are on a limited budget because they can still have their students learn from some wonderful authors. The website has tips and guides for both the author and the teacher/librarian to make the most out of a virtual visit, along with how to set one up with Skype, laptop and projector, or even a SmartBoard (http://smarttech.com/).

For me personally, the opportunity to share my disabled dog, Frankie’s message of hope and inspiration in this way is very exciting! I’ve been very conscious of not overstressing Frankie with too many physical visits, but at the same time wanting to help kids overcome their own challenges through Frankie’s example, as well as continue to bring a positive face to animals with disabilities. Traveling by car to states outside of my area is not very feasible for me for financial and time reasons, but offering my presentation to children in other states via Skype is very doable! For schools that do not allow animals because of allergy issues, this can also be overcome with a virtual visit.

Since I published my first book in 2008 and all that has happened with our economy since then, I have never lost hope that new technologies and possibilities of sharing our messages would emerge. I believe that is happening right now with Skype, authors, and teachers and I think it is so fantastic! This is a way for all of us to come together and share our stories and impact the children of the world in a most positive way. And no doubt that will in turn make our world a better place.

Tip: Online reviews: while you can't control the content of reviews online, you can control your reaction to them. If you get a bad review, don't attack the reviewer. Instead, thank him/her for the time (s)he took to read the book and then offer insight on the negative points (s)he mentioned. Thank that reviewer for the feedback because you can always learn from a criticism. Don't battle an online reviewer. You put your book out there and not everyone is going to like it. This is Banned Book Week. From September 26th until October 3rd, we celebrate the First Amendment which allows us the freedom to read what we wish to read and to celebrate our intellectual freedom to express ideas that might not be acceptable to everyone.

An amazing number of books have been on the “banned” list. Almost every state in the Union still has some group who wants specific titles censored, out of the libraries and off the bookstore shelves. The reason this occurs is that certain writers have been bold enough to speak their minds. Harper Lee did it in To Kill a Mockingbird. Mark Twain is still in the hot seat for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

Writing is not for cowards, especially when you write about hot - button topics, attempt to make a specific point or include characters in your work that are less than conventional. Good work can enlighten. When we see something that doesn’t seem right to us, or have a deep sense of commitment on an issue, we naturally have a desire to write about it. Not all readers may agree with us but we must be who we are as writers and as individuals.

To write from a controversial perspective, you must do your homework. Look on ALL sides of the issue, not just the one you support. Do some research on your topic and on your story line to represent your intellectual point of view. Develop your characters with care and understanding.

There is one lesson no one can teach you, how to be thick - skinned. You can suffer because of your decision to express yourself so be prepared. However, if no one took writing past the normally acceptable path, we would never grow in our awareness of that which is unfair and unacceptable. Sometimes you must take sides.
