I'm faithful that all of you had a great holiday and since winter has set in, here in Texas that you are all ready to sit back in your easy chairs on your days off and read a few books.
That said, let's talk about ratings for books and what they mean. Ratings didn't seem that important not long ago, but today, with publishing reaching more readers, and spreading their wings in their genre's it is important to know what you are buying, and if you are buying what you want.
My publisher, Writers Exchange, has gone to many lengths to clarify exactly what is published by her company. She even went so far as to have each author rate their books with exclamations as to why they rated that particular way.
Now why would a publisher waste time on rating a book. There is only one answer...for you...the reader!
But what does it mean?
It simply means that now you will know exactly what kind of book you are buying. Romance and violence have increased their genre's. What am I talking about in plain everyday English? I mean, some sci-fi's are way out there in gore, I mean some romances go way beyond the word romance.
When you buy a book from Writers Exchange you are going to be forwarned of exactly what kind of book you are buying. This also goes for the other extreme. If you want a inpirational romance, you will know it is just that. If you want sensual you will know it is before you buy it.
How many times have you bought a book and then thrown it against the wall because it had content that you either disprove of, or can't quite stomach? How many times have you wanted more, when there was no more?

Not only is violence and sex rated, but language. Some readers are offended by crude language, now you will know before you buy.
Most of the publishers are rating their books now, and it has become necessary.
At Writers we have Sweet, which encompasses no sex, but much tension. We have sensual which goes from
one sex scenes to many. We have sci-fi that has little or no violence, to much violence.
You can pick the kind of book YOU want.
What do I write? Well, thanks for asking. You did ask, didn't you? Okay, most of my books are either
sweet or sensual. Meaning I write both, with very little language profanities. By very little I mean, there might be a "damn" or a "hell", in it, but little else to shock the pallette.
Sweet can vary, from inspirational to closing the bedroom door. But the door is always closed, after all they need their privacy. Examples of my sweet books, Heart of the Wild, Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, Hannah's Man, and Pretend Mom.
Sensual on the other hand might take you from one sex scene to another, or might only have one or two in the entire book, however, it means, there is sex somewhere in the book. Examples of my sensual are,
Nick's Baby (two scenes) Wandering Heart, (two scenes and one that lasts forever) Strictly Business (very
sensual with more than two scenes).
Sci-fi can have some violence, no violence or a warning label of violence. It might have a lot of sex, no sex, or some sex scenes.
Langauge has gotten to be a matter for the writer I think. I have to admit most of mine have a "damn" or "hell" in it, but never vulgar or ugly language.
Books are a matter of taste for the reader. But you will find all kinds out there. Now that publishers are rating the books, you can pick and chose the kind of book you want to read. You can buy with more confidence that this is the kind of book you want.
I hope you will pay attention to the ratings and be forwarned before buying.
