INVOLVING PEOPLE IN CHURCH LIFE

Church involvement is a key measurement of church vitality. Its absence on a significant level signals an unhealthy state. Finding some keys to greater Participation will give encouragement and relief to overworked lay leaders.

To be profitable for church health, involving people should:
1. make use of spiritual gifts.
2. include a cross section of all ages.
3. if a leadership role, be limited in duration.
4. meet a need and/or an interest.

Dos and don’ts associated with greater participation:
1. Don’t give people meaningless jobs.
2. Do affirm every contribution to church life.
3. Do help people see the greater good.
4. Do build in accountability.

If you don’t have lay leaders to handle greater commitment, you can fill this need by:
1. training new recruits,
2. using teenagers in helping roles,
3. having larger classes, and
4. doing fewer ministries well.

Greater participation happens when we tackle needs, tap into people’s interest, and make everything we do of quality.

Tackle Needs - Generally, the more we can embrace people’s felt needs the greater chance for involvement. This is particularly true for boomers and busters. Ask God to lead in identifying needs. Prioritize this list based on what’s most pressing and what will have the greatest immediate impact. Use your best communicator to share this needs’list with church leaders. Utilize a graphic artist to professionally depict each need for use by your enlisted communicator at an initial leadership meeting. Seek after and pray for a “holy passion”. Tackle meeting these needs with all the energy and creativity you can muster.

Tap Interest - To secure active engagement beyond fulfilling needs, find areas of people’s interest. People will give more time and energy to those things that capture their attention. Awards attached to jobs of intrigue provides further incentive. Such awards should always include public recognition (banquets, Sunday school parties, etc.). Periodic affirmations as well as yearly recognition will help maintain a renewed attachment to their interest. Ask God’s guidance in
developing activities, events, and worship experiences that arouse people’s attention.

Teach Excellence - People are attracted to quality. Model it in front of your leaders. Do the little Things. A painted wall, decorated bulletin board, or a little lesson plan creativity will begin to signal excellence in ministry. Start with upgrading your buildings, move to improving worship, and end with betterment of church programming. Buildings should come first because they can be done the quickest and with immediate and visual impact. People respond to accomplishment. The beginning of excellence is the beginning of new faces involved in church life.

Greater involvement of your people can happen. It will occur when you tackle needs, tap people’s interest, and teach excellence. You become the catalyst, your people the recipient, and your church the benefactor.
