That’s a question we often hear these days when people see Built By The Owner’s Design. Actually, there are many ways you can be of assistance. Here are a few ideas:

1. Order a copy. (I wish I could give each of you a copy free but financially that is an impossibility.)
2. Tell others that, while you would be delighted if they bought the book, you’re just writing to let them know it exists.
3. Tell your colleagues, your friends, and your church members about this new resource. Talk it up over coffee, during phone conversations, at church meetings, etc.

REVIEW FROM DOUG BEACHEM

* “Built By The Owner’s Design” is a user-friendly analysis of certain critical features related to church growth. Four things make this book very valuable and a resource that I am going to encourage others to read.

1. It is well written and is brief (130 pages). Von Kanel does not waste words chasing rabbits and cuts to the heart of the matter in the issues he discusses. This is not designed to be a major resource book but a practical, hands-on, tool for the average pastor and
lay leaders The footnotes are sufficient for a functional bibliography although I would have enjoyed reading extended footnotes with more discussion.

2. The book takes the principles of the church growth movement and in a non-polemical fashion discusses some of the pros and cons (and unintended consequences) of the major emphases of the past thirty years. Von Kanel disagrees with certain aspects of the movement in a way that is gracious yet precise. For instance, he raises legitimate questions concerning the “seeker sensitive” services without attacking the fundamental heart of ministry of well known key leaders, such as Bill Hybils. In my view, Von Kanel’s critique is not so much of these larger ministries but of how local pastors can be offered a water-down gospel in the vain hope of reaching more people in their communities.

3. The book is written for the average pastor. In fact this is one of the two major strengths of this book. Von Kanel’s studies (mostly in Mississippi) among Southern Baptist, United Methodist, and Presbyterian Church US are insightful. Coming from a Pentecostal
background, I think most Penecostal congregations would have similar responses to these other churches. The book contains practical suggestions and work-plans that are user-friendly for the average size and smaller congregation in the USA. I believe that most laymen would find this an easy to read book and also easy to get to the heart of the central message regarding evangelism and discipleship.

4. In my opinion, this fourth reason is perhaps the most significant strength of the book. Von Kanel effectively engages in connecting evangelism to the life of the local congregation and to the second component of the Great commission: make disciples. Too
many books focus on one at the expense of the other. This book unites them. In particular, chapters 8-11 are one of the best descriptions of connecting evangelism and discipleship I have read.

My only criticism is related to culture. The book, and most of his experiences (other than one mid-western), are from the “Bible-belt.” I think Bible Belt churches may find this book more readily a resource than perhaps in the Northeast or West Coast or some larger American cities. However, even outside the Bible-Belt, the issues he raises are valid and local pastors will find it easy to make appropriate applications.

In all candor, I was surprised at how much I marked this book for quotations I will use in my ministry. I was also surprised how much I enjoyed reading it. I wonder if, like me, a lot of pastors and others in ministry have read so many “church growth’ books that we feel like we’re reading the same book with different names and locations? This book is a refreshing and
