I will not be sharing a regular newsletter this week. The magnitude of yesterday’s events makes it difficult for me to write this. The tragic loss of thousands of lives, the senseless decimation of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon numbs me and everyone around the world witnessing such a horrendous event. I can’t even comprehend the mindset of human beings with such deformed hearts and no sanctity for precious life, nor do I want to. This attack on freedom and humanity baffles those of us who treasure it and something that was unfathomable unfolds before our eyes. I am in shock. Never did I ever imagine such a catastrophe could occur.
But we will mourn and we will find strength to get our lives back into some kind of semblance. Then we must consider how we have helped contribute to this calamity. You think we didn’t? Last year MSNBC did a report on how the CIA helped train Osama bin Laden and his organization commit acts of terrorism against the Soviet Union, who then occupied Afghanistan. Now this has been turned against us. That is only one example, there are many others. Terrorist attacks have hit many portions of our world and now we are left to face the aftermath in the United States. But I will not bury my head in the sand and look to where blame lies. How much more will it take before we all realize our governments don’t always make decisions to the best of our interests? It is time we all take responsibility for the monsters we help create, and make choices to promote peace. All fingers are pointing to Osama bin Laden and he could very well be the monster.
In the tomorrows to come I will blow away the fluff so much of our media has covered our minds with and look at what is underneath. It might not always be a pleasant sight and it will probably leave a bitter taste in my mouth, but changes must come. No longer should we leave our security in the hands of others. We must do our part, especially as writers, to educate and help bring hope back to the human spirit.
Today my heart goes out to the many victims and families of this atrocious act. I send prayers and know most of you are doing the same. May peace reign.
