As early as age 12 I decided to be a journalist. I graduated with special honors in journalism from George Washington University. After graduation, during Korean War time, I was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent most of my tine on active duty at Stars & Stripes in Germany. Back in civilian life, I became an award-winning reporter for the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press and International News Service. Dissatisfied with standard journalism, in 1960 I began publishing THE CALIFORNIAN, the periodical which, along with Paul Krassner's brilliant journal of freethought criticism and satire, THE REALIST, touched off the Alternative Press. Following the demise of THE CALIFORNIAN I earned a living as an information specialist for various organizations for four years. After those stints I was able to earn a living as a freelance writer and contributing editor for a number of periodicals, especially the San Francisco Bay Guardian, until 1985. From 1985 to 2005 I ran a non-profit organization I created, the Homosapiens Educational & Legal Project. Since then I have been devoting myself mainly to my e-books operation, Mind Opening Books. Among the men who have been major influences on me are Edward Bellamy, for his books LOOKING BACKWARD and EQUALITY; Alan Harrington, especially for his book THE IMMORTALIST; Terence V. Powderly for his valiant effort to transform the labor union movement (see his autobiography THE PATH I TROD); Thomas Wolfe, especially for LOOK HOMEWARD ANGEL; Ernest Becker, for his dissection of humanity in DENIAL OF DEATH; Brendan Behan (his most powerful writing appears in his autobiography BORSTAL BOY); and Bertrand Russell, George Bernard Shaw, George Orwell (Eric Blair), Henry David Thoreau, and Thomas Huxley.
