HUEY – Wed Sept 11, 2014

Governor Huey Long had a late night meeting in his office at the State Capitol Building in Baton Rouge, LA. It began at 8 pm and lasted until well after 9 pm.

When Long finally took his leave, he walked out with two well-armed (with tommy-guns) bodyguards. A Dr. Carl Weiss had tried to see him at least three times (unsuccessfully).

On the first floor, Dr. Weiss saw his opportunity and stepped out of the darkness of an alcove and, after the ‘ciick’ of a jammed pistol, fired one shot into the abdomen of Huey Long. He was dead before he hit the floor.

The two bodyguards immediately opened fire and riddled Dr. Weiss with sixty-six bullets; he never had a chance. He, like ex-governor Long, was dead before he hit the floor.

The newspapers (and Long’s detractors, which were many) had a field day with this assassination—all except businessman Dwight Weiss, Dr. Weiss’s brother, who claimed his sibling carried the defective pistol only because he made late night house, hospital and office calls routinely. He had had a call to the State Capitol just that night to see a patient; there was, of course, no record that he had been called.

So, the police claimed they had their man.

All, except the surviving Weiss, agreed. He explained to the police why his brother had the gun in the first place and why Dr, Weiss, although never a fan of Long’s, never bad-mouthed him or spoke ill of anyone in public life.

Consequently, the police took Dr. Weiss’s name off the case, and filed it away as AN UNSOLVED HOMOCIDE 0F 1934.

(The two bodyguards with tommy-guns, however—though both had ‘police records’—not even questioned by law-enforcement officers.)

The Huey Long shooting has long-since been buried as Louisianna’s MOST UNSOLVED MYSTERY!
