It is less than a hundred who have abandoned their homes and jobs in Georgia for Colorado in order to take advantage of the medicinal value of marijuana to assist their children in overcoming the some of the diseases of childhood.


Of course, I would be happy to join them, even at my age, if Primary lateral sclerosis was a disease affected by ingestion of cannabis — not that I’d ever consider smoking it!


But unfortunately, no mention of PLS was ever made — although its cousin, ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), occupies substantial space in the write-ups. Can it be true that medical marijuana has no effect on PLS? If so, how can this be?


Perhaps it is so. PLS has only about 700 victims in the entire USA, while there are easily 10,000 cases of ALS in America alone. It is no wonder PLS and ALS have the worst sort of medical insurance this writer has ever heard of!


The most prominent member of society I know of who has ALS is Stephen Hawking, the English PhD, a Cambridge graduate, a genius who discovered the ‘Big Bang’ theory one day while scribbling, as he often did, on a slab on cement in front of a train station with a piece of borrowed chalk. Hawking was so ahead of his time he never believed ALS was fatal; he continues to live with his Illness for more than sixty years.


Getting back to PLS: I’d be happy to pull up stakes and seek a remedy in Denver, if one existed, since none is available to me in Atlanta. I have not had a job for many years, and home here is of no consequence — except the winters in Colorado leave little to be desired.


I would even offer myself was ‘an experiment’ if I were to be used as a tool, made available to the ‘powers that be’, if PLS were added to the roster of diseases for which medical marijuana just might be beneficial.


I am ready to go; just say the word.
