Gunter Hampel Trio

at the Zeitgeist Gallery

One of my favorite poets, Herschel Silverman, will be reading poetry with the Gunter Hampel Trio at the Zeitgeist for an evening of free jazz and beat poetry. Gunter Hampel is a prolific vibist, bass clarinetist, flutist, saxophonist, composer and founder of Birth Records and a major instigator of Germany’s free-jazz-movement. His American collaborators have included his wife Jeanie Lee, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, Marion Brown, Perry Robinson, and many others.

Perry Robinson, clarinetist, began recording and touring with Gunter Hampel in the early 1970s and has worked with Hampel over the course of 21 albums. He has worked with Dave Brubeck, John Carter, Tete Montollu, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, William Parker, Walter Perkins, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, Burton Greene, George Clinton, Mark Whitecage, and his father, composer, Earl Robinson. His own quartet has just finished their fourth CD, “Still Traveling” (West Wind) and has recently co authored an autobiography by the same name with Florence Wetzel. He also plays with Lou Grassi’s PoBand.

Lou Grassi, band leader of Lou Grassi’s Po Band, has drummed from ragtime to no-time. He has played with ragtime pianist Max Morath and such avant-garde jazz luminaries as Marshall Allen, Borah Bergman, Rob Brown, Roy Campbell, Charles Gayle among others. He recently recorded both with Roswell Rudd.
