Just in case the excitement about the release of my funny, how-to-get-published book, THE MANUSCRIPT-EATING SLUSH PILE MONSTER, is getting too much for you here’s another dose of anticipation. My editor now says the release date is sometime in “late spring.” I’ve completed the final edits on the text, but the cover art and the indexing aren’t quite there yet. So, stay tuned until next month when I hope to know more. (Sigh!)

Q: Do you have a special animal writing companion that keeps you company while you’re creating?

A: I did until very recently. At about four years of age Cinnamon Bunny passed away from what we think was a virus. I miss her terribly.

Cinnamon was very attentive—all ears, you could say—whenever I need someone to listen to me read my prose out loud. She never voiced a comment about my work, but then again, rabbits aren’t known for being brilliant conversationalists. She was happy just to sit in her little spot under the old TV and keep me company while I typed, occasionally gracing me with her presence with a hop, skip or sudden bunny leap into the air beside my desk. She really knew how to make me laugh.

Lots of writers tell me about their cats sitting on their keyboards and sleeping on their manuscript boxes, but I think I prefer a rabbit as a writing companion. Whenever I needed any rough draft I particularly detested shredded into bits, Cinnamon’s big front teeth were certainly more than up to the task.

It’s particularly hard to lose a pet house rabbit at this time of year since rabbits are featured in so many commercials and print ads for Easter products. But, in a way, it’s nice to see that rabbits can garner just as much respect as the more traditional animal companions at least during one season of the year. J
