Thanks for asking about the treatment of the Elk. It is very important to know that it is not detrimental to the animal -- matter of fact -- it is for the Elk''s protection as well as the herd.

This is animal friendly and good for vegetarians. The only other mammalian organ that grows and is discarded in nine months (and can grow again in the same mammal) is the placenta. Growth of an organ requires energy and a system whereby super nutrient raw materials must flow to that developing organ. This challenges all the efficiency and complexity that nature ever devised. Both the placenta and the antler have an amazing spectrum of cellular and biochemical activity that includes cell replication, immune mechanisms, and unique aging processes -- accelerated and intensified because of their short life cycles. And both are shed after a defined period in balance with the host.

The elk at the Redwater River Ranch in Alberta Canada live on 320 acres and are loved and taken care of by Russell Lakusta. He is the breeder, harvester and manufacturer.
