In the movie "The Rock", Nicolas Cage is about to give up on his misson. He tells Sean Connery, "I did the best I could."

Connery gets angry and yells, "Losers are always whining about 'doing the best they could.' Winners go home and bang the prom queen."

Beware of slogans that get you conveniently off the hook, like "Well, you live and learn". Or "Everybody is doing the best they can." Or "Well, it couldn't be helped." Or "Well, I tried."
