So, I am actually on vacation as I write this. I am in a magnificent home across from the dog beach in Carmel. Early mornings are filled with watching the antics of the dogs who have come to play on la playa with their owners.

In the afternoons, people spend time learning to surf. I've seen a sea lion playing in the surf and taken many nice ambles. I'll be heading home soon but it has been along time since I've taken a vacation and it is only because you are waiting that I sat down to the computer to write this newsletter!

I've had a great time traveling up the coast. One of my animal career secrets students was taking a class and then going into an internship helping with some sea lions in the area so we carpooled together.

I am waiting to hear about her adventures on the way home since she has been so busy we haven't spoken much - - only a few text messages here and there but I will be excited to hear about her adventures.

However, I have to say that I have been having a great time watching others train and manage their animal businesses. It is relaxing and fun to just take pictures and only be known to the select few.

I also took some time to visit the Monterey Bay aquarium, stunning exhibits and multimedia presentations. I need to go back for another
look but I was so entranced by some of the exhibits - - and it gave me a big flash back to my early days at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium when it was known only as the Cabrillo Beach Marine Museum.

2. Product(s) of the Month

I did an interview with a syndicated columnist on this trip. She is working on a holiday piece about gift giving for pets and wanted to know my thoughts about it.

My personal favorites are those toys or treats that engage an animal. I like to raise the IQs of animals and the right toys and food dispensing devices do that.

Puzzle Plush™ Animal Puzzles such as Hide - A - Bee™ or
Hide - A - Bird™ are fun and stimulating to dogs.

Dog Tornado (Nina Ottosson) and Dog Board games or feeder balls are favorites too.

Cat puzzles or tube games and different bird puzzles keep animals mentally challenged and active and are good investments for any time of the year.

Now I also like that antlers have become more popular. In addition to being animal friendly (antlers drop off naturally) they also provide
good chewing options and give the animal some additional minerals.

Another new trend? Hammocks! Dogs and cats love them because they raise them off of cold or hot surfaces and also give them a better vantage point.
