So fall has arrived around these parts. The cool, crisp nights and mornings remind us that it is time to start prepping for winter.

However the days are still fairly warm and I have to say that I am not in a hurry to rush into cold weather. Fall is my favorite time of the year and I enjoy it but after the last couple of winters I am thinking I might be taking some short excursions to the warmth of the desert.

Now the news has been filled with the aftermath stories of Hurricane Irene and let this be a reminder to those of you who signed up early enough to get the Animal Disaster Guide - - don't delay and get yourselves prepped for both natural and man - made disasters while this is still fresh on your mind!

Even though the damage was not as bad as was anticipated, it is lucky that it wasn't. Urban dwellers face risks and challenges that some of us rural folks don't. Rural living makes you a bit more hardy in a variety of ways.

In fact, I was talking to my intern about this very thing. Nick (University of California at Riverside) joined me in August to learn more about online business practices and a few other tidbits. He has been working with me virtually and today complained about slow internet.

My story about how I had dial - up as a backup strategy until May 2011 was funny but true. Now I have my cell phone but if we lose power for days on end like we did last winter - - that won't help much either!

I am meeting Nick for the first time tomorrow in between early morning appointments and afternoon errands. He gets a midterm assessment from me but will still be working with me into October. I asked him to jump onto the Facebook page to introduce himself but he hasn't yet.

Speaking of Facebook, if you are a member on my page you might have caught that we started filming some segments for the pet parenting school. Although I was taking casting call applications, we discussed some changes since I want to use shelter animals and have an idea that will make it a winning prospect for everyone.

Finally, as you might know, we did a website design change last November and it hasn't worked out very well for me in a lot of different ways. I have an innovative web designer that is going to be assisting me in the change but at the moment it has been a very big task to figure out how to structure the new look so that it is easier to find the content and share it.

So, fall is coming soon and that means it is time for the Blessing of the Animals!

Most celebrations occur just before the Feast Day of Saint Francis, a Catholic celebration but October 4th is also World Animal Day.

Most people today are actually celebrating their pets all through the year. Many animal organizations and a variety of faith centers have joined in - - some even now allow animals to attend services.

If you don't know, I wrote a book called, "Blessing of the Animals." It is a handbook for all types of traditional and contemporary pet celebrations.

This guide not only shares some of the history behind such events, but also gives pet parents guidelines, prayers and suggestions of ceremonies they could hold.

It actually was sparked by the requests for animal blessings during my previous book tour when I discovered that people needed to know more about it. They were uplifting and fun.

Today there are quiet a few books on the topic you might want to check them out online or at your favorite bookstore. Time to think about gift giving or about ways to raise funds for your favorite animal organization.
