Yikes! Is it really June? Time is flying by.

My animal training reunion was fun but exhausting. In fact, this month has been a tough one but overall things are looking up.

The reunion was amazing and it was nice to be around other animal professionals since there are so few in my area. All animals and all children were well behaved. We also were pleased to see three of our animal pals from the old days still alive.

Jack the bald eagle juvenile was on the nest when I got back from the reunion and I thought I caught a glimpse of him last night. Captain John, who owns the marina across from where I live, has seen him following the adults and learning to hunt.

He should remain with the adults until sometime near August. In the meantime, the birds have seemed to dub my deck the "party perch" and they are having a great time making a mess and bossing me around.

I've been gearing up with more activity and inherited a vintage Australian water toy that is a cross between a surfboard and a kayak. My hope is to get back out on the water and build back my stamina.

In the meantime, I enjoy my walks on the creek and short jaunts into the forest. Going down into the city reminds me why I chose to live hear despite all the challenges of rural living.

And it was odd to receive a call from a Texas Zoo this week asking if I was available to come out and do some training with their staff and elephants. I'm not sure if it will pan out but since I am available, you never know!

I might also give in and do some private training lessons to pet owners or pet pros if they want to come this way.

Finally, I will begin writing again this month so check out the blog once a week for updates. All the sites have been migrated and now we just have to finish updating their designs!

One of the things I take for granted, having been in my industry for so long, is how much knowledge is in my skull. Having a degree in animal training and management isn't very common and when I began my career quest, I found private facilities that offered both experiential and academic training.

Today there are many different options available, but with little regulation, anyone can pick a moniker and hang up a shingle. This is why there is such a inconsistency when it comes to techniques and skill.

About a month ago, a few people I know were following a popular animal training personality who was perpetuating the myth that dogs (or animals of all sorts) don't understand a whole lot of words.

Personally, I think using a human scale to study animals tends to be misleading for a several reasons.

First, if you teach vocabulary, animals learn much like human toddlers do. In fact, a few years ago a study was done to document just how many words a border collie knew but I thought it was a bit limiting. Then, in 2011, another border collie (Chaser) from Spartanburg, S.C., was reported as knowing 1,022 nouns.

The thing to keep in mind is that non - human animals are multi - talented because they learn to understand human communication over time.

And here is the thing most people overlook, animals don't tend to use verbal communication, they rely on the nuances of body language, expressions and intuitive sense.

I find that they are usually much more plugged in than people give them credit for and I've had a lot of success with animals simply because I worked to acquire their subtle languages and watched the nuances of their unspoken communication.

This is why animals are great teachers.

The birds on my deck have been entertaining me with their antics and alert me to everything happening around me in both their activities and sounds. We have this symbiotic relationship now that has extended around town.

You see, they come up to my deck from the bay and the creek and we have encounters all around the area. I find it interesting that more birds are alerting me to the things that are happening in the immediate surroundings.

Anyway, if you haven't done so yet, take some time to read and explore the world of animal communication.

Many businesses think that they can just do a few things and rank well.
