Did you celebrate Groundhog Day? If you were too wrapped up in the Super Bowl frenzy you might have missed it. This is the first time that both days coincided.

The predication is for six more weeks of winter and I have to say I agree based on the sudden change of weather where I am staying in the high desert.

As for the big game, Seattle hit the ground running and never stopped and my NFL enthusiast pals were not too happy with the one sided game.

Life has throwing some curve balls. I am slowly moving through mold recovery, it is a long drawn out process which I hope to write about sometime soon but family concerns mean that I will be traveling back to South Carolina temporarily.

If you want to send good thoughts and prayers for my father and family, that would be appreciated.

The upside to the last month is that I was able to reconnect with longstanding human and animal pals. Always enjoyable.

At the moment, I am busy working on wellness and mapping out projects. My plans have been mostly delayed but I am excited about some of the new skills and techniques I will share this year.

This last month I've been spending a lot of time with different animals and their people. The best thing that happened was my impromptu class to some youngsters--age 10 and up.

What arose out of the session was a vital lesson. Young people admire and model the behavior of the adults in their lives. In many cases this is a great thing, in others--not so much.
In question was a situation where one of the young teens was adamant about not having his dog neutered despite the issues that were arising within the household triggered by the dog's maturity.

Also, the dog is genetically not very fit, so despite the young man's desire to breed him, it just isn't a good idea for a number of reasons beyond the genetic concerns.

What transpired was a discussion about how some people cling to old methodology, beliefs, or traditions despite the fact that more humane options exist.

When new knowledge and advances have been made, and technology or techniques exist that are better for animals, it makes no sense to cling to the old.

Of course you want to do the best for an animal in your care...right?

I was glad to be able to give the young man something new and different to ponder and am sure this will be another article or part of my next work in the near future.

I encourage you to take a look at what you might cling to and see what options you might explore when it comes to both animals or other areas of your life.

The Marketing Makeover in January was a great success for those who participated.

Held over four sessions, attending businesses were amazed at what they learned and the owners got busy working on the planning, strategies and other assignments given.

The class will be offered online in the near future--and if you missed the live events, don't worry. Starting this month all classes will be only offered virtually (online) through a pay-per-view portal.

We are giving businesses access to online learning portals to tackle the "how to" of getting businesses online or helping assign that task to staff.

I'm excited to have partnered with two colleagues to provide this on demand training opportunity. If you are a business that wants to enroll, simply email me and I can send you the link.

Fees start at $97 per month for non-chamber members. If you are a member of the Big Bear Chamber, you can get access for only $67 per month and if you have a membership in another chamber, email me to get this training center live so you and other members can benefit.

Just a reminder that if you have not come up with some specials for Valentine's Day, President's Day or Spring Break--get working on it now. Pre-sell seasonal offers or offer incentives for the slower periods now. You'll be glad you did!

Finally, don't fall for the sensationalism in the media related to the California weather. Come up with some alternate offers and creative spins on attracting people to your business now when there is no ice on the roads.
Many businesses have been busier than ever simply because people are spending more money instead of staying in.

Should the groundhog be wrong about the additional six weeks of winter, look for partnerships with other businesses, opportunities to form strategic alliances with knowledgeable hobbyists whose interests intersect with what you have to offer so you can attract their friends.

Simply put on you thinking cap or brainstorm with another business owner and get working on those alternatives now.
