May Day announces the fast approach to the middle of the year and it is almost time for the mid-year review.

I've been swimming to build up my stamina and have been enjoying the warm weather here in the desert. The foliage is still blooming and the sparks of color really do catch the eye since most everything seems to be a shade of brown or dull green.

Meanwhile, a lot of the nation is still hoping for such nice weather and that winter ends soon. The disasters hitting the news is a reminder to me to encourage you to create both a home and business emergency plan.

Earth Day came and went but it is a good time to remind you that if you are using any type of pest control, opt for green options and think about the creatures that might be impacted in the local environment.

Just the other day a neighbor brought me a non-venomous snake for help. The racer had sensed mice trapped in a glue trap and somehow entered the house and had become a sticky mess as it got into the traps.

Covered with cactus spines and unable to really move, I used some olive oil to help loosen things up and soon the snake was on its way. The nice thing about it is that the critter will shed and all will be well.

And so, my hope is that this month finds that all will be well with you too.

Some of you have seen the little Boston terrier that comes to visit often. As usual, I have become the auntie and always encourage (and reinforce) good behavior. Alas, that is not the case in the family.

Good behavior gone wrong happens quickly if people don't pay attention. I had conditioned the pup to come and sit if he wanted attention or to be picked up. Sadly, unless small dogs jump, may people fail to notice good behavior--and so the bad gets reinforced.

This month the owner thought it would be fun to teach the pup how to shake but instead of teaching it as a specific behavior separate from others, he had the pup sit and then shake. What happens now is the pup automatically uses the paw to scratch and the behavior is creating problems.

When behaviors are combined together consistently they become linked together. In the professional realm this is called a behavior chain. What happens is the animal doesn't differentiate between the behaviors but interprets them as one.

Do you have any behaviors that are chained together? It is a common issues so when you are working to teach new behaviors, teach one at a time and refrain from using one to help get another unless you intentionally want to link them together.

Recently someone wrote in about a concern that they were not ranking for a specific term. This is not a surprise since search engines have changed drastically over the past six months. Today the trend is toward speech phrases AND you must also have solid social signals (social media profiles with interactions) and reviews (reputation).

If your business has several different offerings consider ranking for the business name as well as the top 2-3 services you desire to promote. In addition, your website should be regularly updated. At least once a month would be good.

It is never a good idea to search for your business or keywords as you can influence the results by not clicking over as well. Plus, you can get totally different results in all the search engines especially if you fail to pay attention to whether or not you have designated public results or personal results in the Google search engine.

Mobile results will also be different depending on what browser and settings you have in the phone for location. It is always good to have professionals assist you in getting your online presence dialed in as it is continues to change as technology moves forward.
