Believe it or not, the year is half over. I just returned to California and survived the travel day from hell. It surprised me when I made a few comments about the airline I flew back on because many seem to dislike the company and I certainly won't be flying with them again.

My trip did not go as planned, Internet access was limited at times due to the thunderstorms and the trees at the lake house. And although visiting with family was great, there were many very stressful challenges and still some ahead. The good news is that my father is doing better and I am on the mend as well. However, none of the doctors seems to know how long recovery from the mold exposure will take. I am thinking part of the book title needs to be some of the time spans from the exposure, treatment and recovery.

I had a lot of great experiences and checked out a few cities but didn't get to do all that I had planned. Fun included mingling with other authors and reconnecting with my favorite author, attending a writers' group, and being adopted by one of the local bookstores and eight ducklings. Seriously, every time I showed up on the leisure trail the ducklings would run up to me as fast as they could, pause, and then waddle back to what they were doing.

It brought a smile to my face every time. I must have reminded them of someone but it was funny because they would look confused when they got to me--not knowing what to do. They also would swim all the way across the lake to intercept me...and then they got some goslings to do the same thing. It gave me great joy to watch them grow. When I left they were almost as big as the adults.

At the moment, I am back in Big Bear for the 4th of July holiday and a few weeks following. I'll be traveling up the coast of California and will know my plans by the end of the month--at least that is the plan--and you know how that goes!

My trip back to the Carolinas was filled with walks in nature and time in the water. I enjoy bird watching but was also able to watch a variety of turtles in the lake while I strolled on the shoreline. The foliage was lush and green while the water was a magnificent mirror for the clear blue and cloud enhanced sky.

Each day a storm came through, increasing the heat with humidity. I got pretty good at knowing when a storm was going to hit. The thunderstorms were brief and brought back memories of a similar pattern in Big Bear, California.

Needless to say, coming back to California was a bit of a shock, not only was it smoggy but it was brown and congested. The hurried pace replaced the slow, southern rate of life. However, it seemed as if the mosquitoes I thought had left behind seemed to have made sure their cousins would be here to torment me upon my return.

To say things are a bit dry here is an understatement so I wanted to just remind everyone that the foxtails are drying up in record numbers so use caution when taking your pets out for strolls. These prickly little things work their way into any orifices, paw pads and into the skin--creating a lot of problems.

Don't forget about the heat as well. Imagine my horror to see people transporting their pets to open markets in the desert. The asphalt and cement walkways radiate a lot of heat. Pets tend to be safer at home but if you do take them with you, use cooling collars, provide shade, avoid the heat of the day, be mindful of the temperatures where you walk them, and don't leave any animal unattended in a vehicle since cars act like a greenhouse and get dangerously hot in minutes.

I've done a lot of articles on topics such as these and you'll be glad to hear that we are revamping and integrating all my blogs into one main one. Things should begin ramping up by 2015 and for those of you waiting on some new books and updates on the previous--I have a few on the planning board.

As we move into the second half of 2014 and celebrating the 4th of July holiday, it is also a time to celebrate success but to also reassess how the year is going for your business. This means that July is a good time to conduct a mid-year marketing assessment. I find that sitting down and reviewing the year can help map out the second half to meet those goals established earlier in the year.

For many local businesses in Big Bear, things start hopping this month, but just a reminder that if you are working from your annual calendar, you know you will be working on marketing for the fall and early winter season now.

There have been drastic changes (again!) in the online marketing world which is why ongoing work and updates to your websites, social platforms and business citations for reputation are so important. If you are a member of the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce, read the Q&A in my column for additional insights.

Some of you may remember the 30 day business challenge (#30DBC) of last year. The challenge is geared toward helping businesses develop habits that help with online marketing and important tasks. The lessons take place daily for 30 days and then the course becomes a part of our webucation series available by subscription.

The online world is changing at a super fast pace so if you haven't been able to keep up, the series should help you get up to speed. Watch for the release this fall, tentatively scheduled for September in conjunction with back to school and just before the big winter holiday season.


This July, plan on booking a strategic marketing session with me, or come to the mid-year marketing makeover sessions while I am in your area. If your business is not growing or seeing the results you want, plan on ramping it up for the second half of the year.
