Summer is coming to an end and soon many of the resort areas will be slowing down while others will shift into a new season of special offerings to another group of willing customers. The animals seem to be confused as to what the season it is, and I find youngsters still emerging into the world, a good deal later than usual.

At the moment I am nestled on the bluff above the beach in Carmel catching up on rest and penciling out some new offers to my business clients and organizations while I outline my next book.

The days are spent with canine pals, strolling on the beach and bluffs while the marina life is abundant and amusing with their antics. My trip here is usually later in the year when it is quieter, but it is great to see the influx of visitors enjoying beach bonfires and the amenities found in the cooler climate of the central coast.

For many, school will be starting next week. The ebb and flow of life tends to continue as usual despite our best plans to change it up. I've got some exciting news so read on and enjoy the last of the summer here in North America.

Today I set out on a marina safari with a good friend and Captain Yohn--a man who charms the Moss Landing visitors with his stories and congeniality. Each boat is packed with nature lovers who are also given chores for counting wildlife to anchor in the knowledge they gain during the trip while they learn about many nature facts and about the animal behavior.

Today the sky was filled with terns and pelicans and the shores were thickly lined with shorebirds. A variety of sea birds bobbed on the surface surrounding our boat. Seals, sea lions and otters kept us amused and the close encounters are what keep the Elkhorn Slough Safari crew busy. Locals and visitors pack each cruise and every time is different.

When I started my career as a marine naturalist many years ago, I remember when the brown pelicans were highly endangered (in the mid-1970s) but today they are abundant. The same thing happened with the otters--in 1915 there were fewer than 50 today the threatened species count is close to 3,000--still a fraction of what the population was in the past.

One of the things you can do to help wildlife is to use non-toxic cleaning materials, refrain from dumping chemicals, oil and commercial cleaning products down drains, and refrain from using plastic water bottles, bags and other products that land up in the ocean in the stomachs of many creatures.
