Happy Labor Day!

If you are home working on something you are not alone. Here locally a huge number of people are kicking up their heels during this last weekend of summer and, in case you are concerned, you'll be glad to know that I'll be heading down to join some of the festivities a little later.

At the moment I am back in California enjoying the cool nights and warm days in the mountains of San Bernardino. My recovery is progressing and the reason I am hard at it this weekend is that I head down for some intensive therapy for most of this week. Our hope is that it takes me forward to the next level of healing.

The upside is that I did being writing the mold recovery book but other projects require I bounce back and forth and continue to move me off into activities online. It sure is nice to reconnect with other folks that have noticed my absence and that have been welcoming me back. Today is my first day back in full swing and it seems fitting since it is Labor Day here in the USA!

Around here the animals are glad to see me and many dogs leave their owners to come say hello and get some puppy lovin'. Seriously, there is nothing in the domestic animal realm like an exuberant canine greeting.

Today one of my long time pals ran out of the yard and wouldn't leave...smiling and leaning so hard that his entire body began wrapping around my legs as his tail wagged heartily. Those type of greetings are mighty good for the soul.

Currently I am staying on the second level of a home that sits level with the tree tops near the forest. Not far from the mold house, I am sequestered away in a quiet neighborhood and living near a couple of canine pals including a Dachshund.

She has a few of nicknames:
-Darling Dachshund is her nickname when she behaves
-Delinquent Dachshund is the nickname when she doesn't.
-Drama Dog is the term when she is working it one way or the other.

Now the dog adores me and is sharp as a whip, but she and her owner can be lazy. The interesting thing about being next to an average pet owner is that it gives me huge insight into behavior and actions that I've never understood since I've been working with animals since childhood and professionally since 15.

Locally, all the neighbors have expressed their hope that I'll get the little yapper to shut up. You see, her owner lets her bark excessively and makes excuses for it. But not only that, she also lets her out at 6:00am on the weekends and holidays (today it was 7:00am) allows her to yip as much as the dog wants without repercussions.

The good news is that the little delinquent has learned that when I say, "quiet" from my balcony that it is best to cooperate since I have follow through. Every. Single. Time. That is what is making her become more of a darling--a nice trend that at least one neighbor has thanked me for.

The other poor behavior happens around when she asks to go out. She doesn't always do her business and then keeps the "in and out" process going. Her owner cooperates since she has mobility issues. This means that the dog was having accidents despite the outside excursions.

As for trips with me, the strict "auntie" who takes her out at night, she knows that her returns to the door before she eliminates are futile. Why? Because I pick her up and take her back to the toileting area until she performs the required task before bedtime.

Due to the proximity to the forest, predators are close and she has to be closely monitored for safety. It makes me chuckle when the owner talks about training the dog but doesn't ever follow through to get the changes she desires.

Why do I mention this? Well, first it is a common problem. Behavior changes only occur when consistent rules are applied and the owner is persistent enough to follow through.

Secondly, my series of booklets for solving behavior problems will go into editing and updating for release within the next year. If you have specific issues with your dog or cat, keep an eye out for the release announcements.
