Most of you know that I stay home for the winter. The winter weather is a good time to write. Just like the critters surrounding me, I emerge in the spring to
get ready for an active summer and fall. We all thought it was spring but then experienced a few nice snowfalls!
The trout are spawning in the creek, the bugs and bees are buzzing and the butterflies are on the quest for flowers. The chorus of birds every morning is unbelievable, too. Make it a point to visit the desert or the mountains in the near future—they are stunning.
The BIG news is that I signed my new book contract on March 17, 2005 for a book scheduled to be released in the fall of 2006. I believe the luck o' the Irish will be with the project as a result. Here are the details:

has not been set).
Sterling Publishing was founded in 1949 by David A. Boehm and expanded with the acquisition of Lark Books (1999) and Hearst Books (2002). In January 2003,
Sterling Publishing was acquired by America's largest bookstore retailer, Barnes & Noble and is one of the world's leading publishers of nonfiction titles with more than 5,000 books in print.
Guerrero is a renowned author, speaker and animal expert. Seen on Animal Planet® and highlighted as a featured expert on NBC and ABC news, Guerrero has
provided services for wild and domestic animals and their bipedal primates (humans)since 1978. Her last book, ‘What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons of Wild & Tame Creatures’ has developed a grassroots following and is currently distributed throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India.”
MORE: I also accepted another assignment scheduled for release in the spring of 2006. On this project I am a contributing editor to a professional book on crisis management for zoos and other animal facilities. The last project was released in 1999 and achieved international recognition so I am looking forward to doing this again.

3. Critter Chronicles: Pet & Animal Topics
==================================================
Some of my most enjoyable events are pet blessings and related ceremonies. I was the guest of Olvera Street in Los Angeles for their 75th Annual Blessing of the Animals.
The event has been an annual tradition since 1930 and Cardinal Mahoney was on hand to bless all the attending critters. I had the opportunity to meet many LA notables and had a blast with all the critters. Thousands attended—it was absolutely amazing. I look forward to participating again next year and hope to post a few photos up on my site within the next couple of weeks.
If you have not ever attended a pet blessing I encourage you to do so. If your pet is unruly you can always bring in a photo of your companion animal to be blessed and enjoy the festivities with peace of mind.
Some of you know that I have been in the news quite a bit over the past year and a half. Last month I commented on the chimpanzee attacks at Animal Haven in Caliente, California and over 600 new visitors came onto the website _daily_ to read them. Speaking of latest breaking news, I penned an article on the controversy related to the California Veterinary Medical Association lawsuit against the City of West
Hollywood. You probably heard about the “pet cosmetic surgery” debate. The article will appear in Vision Magazine this month and there are some valuable resources included. If the issue gets more volatile you will find it on my website in the breaking news area.

4. Book Suggestion: The Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior

Since I go through so many books each month it is often hard for me to pick the one that stands out from the pack. Because both writers and animal lovers subscribe to this newsletter the selection can be a dilemma. This month I decided to select an animal book trio that is
both educational and unusual.
Released earlier this year, the Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior had to be a daunting task to put together. The three volumes provide an introductory overview on various behavior topics. I don’t envy the editor (Marc Bekoff) who bravely tackled the project.
Anyone interested in animal related topics will find this three volume set useful. The up-to-date information contains contributions from many experts in a variety of fields.
Entries include submissions from disciplines such as ethology, psychology, biology, veterinary medicine, behavior and others.
One major difference is that it includes dialog regarding animal emotions, awareness, consciousness and empathy. These have been taboo topics in the past. The other nice aspect of this work is the wide range of material it introduces. Regular behavior topics
such as social organization, behavior patterns, animals as individuals and as a species, domestic and wild animals, and other related subjects, such as careers, are included.
The book is user friendly with reasonably sized articles, short sidebars and provocative essays. I didn’t have much luck with the link last month but am going to try again.
