June was interesting. Despite the promises to send me the stories,the elementary school never delivered. So, sorry to say you won’t have to vote on the best stories. Too bad since I was looking forward to posting them and even got Barnes & Noble to commit to prizes for the winners--in addition to the other great treats lined up.

Next, being an overachiever, I accepted the position of Critter Columnist for eight new animal search engines that launch in August. I’ll let you know the names just as soon as I get the okay.

In the meantime, I’ve been busy with other projects and

2. Question(s) for the Month

Last month’s question asked about your pet peeves. The big one was loose dogs here in the San Bernardino Mountains. My August/September Petiquette column will cover the topic in depth, but here are some highlights:

Leash Law
All dog owners in the mountains of San Bernardino
are required to abide by Division 2, Title 3 of the San
Bernardino County Code (leash law). Violators can face citations, fines up to $1,000 and jail time. Did I forget to mention that this doesn’t include additional liabilities for damages or punishment for the disobedience of other county ordinances?

Forest Frolicking
On you next hike or camping trip, keep in mind that section 261.14 in the Code of Federal Regulations is the federal leash law. Dogs must be on a leash anywhere in the forest. Did you know that camp hosts can give dog owners the boot if they fail to adhere to the law? Any field ranger or law enforcement official can also issue citations for trouble in the forest, public day use areas, or campgrounds. Animal control can come in and cite people, too.

Contractor Crimes of the Canine Kind
Contractor canine crimes is my hot button due to the safety hazards on job sites, unsafe transport and inconsiderate behavior when visiting (working) in other people’s neighborhoods. Local law enforcement, animal control and the California Highway Patrol can handle these violators depending on the location and issue.

Loose dogs are in violation of
1) trespassing laws when they roam on your property or streets, and
2) the county wide leash law, and
3) property owners are also liable and citable for any infractions and misdemeanors by their contractors.

The California Vehicle Code 23117 requires that animals be safely restrained in the back of pick-up trucks and during transport.

Animal control and the sheriff department is pretty helpful on these issues but you can also call the county supervisor, building associations,
and the better business bureau if you don’t get cooperation or experience bad behavior from the contractor.

Fascinating Fact
YOU can issue a citation as an “arresting officer” (often referred to as a “third party citation” or “citizen’s arrest”) and law enforcement will back you up as the “enforcing officer/agency.” So, take pictures, document dates, times and incidents and you can stop the canine crimes. You’ll get a subpoena to appear as the “officer” witnessing the violation(s).
Judges are convinced by documentation.

3. Critter Chronicles: July 4th Pet Noise Phobia Tips
===============================================
Since the Fourth of July is a trauma to many animals, I thought I would include helpful hints to help people avoid issues, escapes and injuries
to animals on July 4th:

--Keep your animals inside during July 4th and for
a few days to a week prior to the holiday.

--Make sure you have a tag with current information
on your pet during this time.

--If you take your animal outside for toileting or any other activity, make sure they are under physical restraint via a collar and leash.

--Leave your pets safely at home instead of taking
them to picnics or other holiday events.

--Play music or turn on a radio station with soothing
music to help mask outside noises.

--Buy a plug-in Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) dispenser. This permeates the air with a calming scent and reduces fear and anxiety.

--Keep your pet busy with activities or chew items before the height of noise making occurs.

--Visit your veterinary medical professional and ask for melatonin. This oral neurohormone often provides help for sensitive animals. Use with the veterinarian’s dosage recommendation and _don’t_ try to do it yourself.

--Flower remedies work on an energetic level. Five Flower® or Rescue Remedy® mixes may help reduce your pet’s anxiety.

--Create a safe haven. If your animal is habituated to a crate you may want to provide access for security. Other options include the bathroom, laundry room, garage, basement, or any other den area. The room to choose is one where there are no windows to jump
through, or where windows can be blocked off and are too high and narrow to access.

--Some animals want to hide and will feel safe in a favorite spot, like under the bed. You can create sleeping bag tunnel or similar option for them.

--Plan a party and play instead of participating in other events. Making new traditions can be fun and helpful for your pet.

--Consider boarding your pet at a professional kennel for the holiday.

Use simple steps to get you through the crisis. If your pet has noise phobia problems you should start your behavior modification problem right after this holiday.

4. Book(s): Harem & Courtesan
===============================================
When I facilitated the weekly meetings of the Alliance of Writers, I also scheduled author appearances. Twice a month a new scribe would brave the hills for a good audience, potluck or lunch, and the bonus of a small stipend to help cover their fuel.

Dora Levy Mossanen was one of my scheduled authors who got bumped due to repercussions of the fires and evacuation. That didn’t stop us from becoming pals and she is one of the members of my online group. (Remind me to tell you about that sometime.)

Anyway, her first book “Harem” was so fabulous that I couldn’t put it down…even when some of the pages were missing! Can you believe that the first run of 50,000 was defective? Despite the rocky printing adventure, the book was fabulous (and yes, they reprinted them correctly). Now she has been labeled as the
“Isabelle Allende of Persia.” Pretty cool for her!

A few of us are taking time off to make the trip to her release party for her newest book, “Courtesan.” The text is hot off the press and just arrived on my desk. Due to my project load, I am having to sneak time to read it and hope it proves to be as good as her first book, “Harem.” I loved “Harem” (and encourage you to go out and get it. (You can support my site and buy it through the link provided below.)

Anyway, the good news is that Dora extended the party invitation to YOU (my subscribers). Don’t miss her party at Dutton’s, a prestigious book store in Beverly Hills. The release party is July 10th and starts at 4pm. Hope to see you there!
