Last month started off with a bang and then slowed down so I could start editing “Blessing of the Animals” again. My client list included a few kitties who were jealous of their dog pals, and another cat who seemed to have no motivation to answer to her owners…err, staff.

The book publishing world is full of phases. Most people don’t understand that books take 2-3 years to produce and that they undergo several editing phases.

Although multiple edits happened before the book went in, my acquisitions editor asked for some minor changes. Now the work has been assigned a project editor who will oversee the assignment until publication. I just finished working on some of the copyediting and anticipate at least one more pass through the work
prior to the production of the galleys.

Galleys are the actual layout of the book before it is bound. We will read through it to make any minor corrections and changes. At that point those people who promised endorsements will be contacted for their opinions.

Next, the galleys will be distributed for advance review about three months prior to publication. This work is anticipated for release in the spring of 2007 (late April).

I also found time to record and distribute a podcast called Ark Animal Answers. You can find it on Itunes and through a few of the other podcast directories. These one minute public service announcements contain tidbits related to the latest animals news and pet care. You
can also listen at my website http://www.arkanimals.com just click into the blog.

Amidst all the work projects, I forgot that I promised myself I would take time out to kayak. So the holiday arrives just in time to remind me that Labor Day is about balance. At one point the effort around this day encouraged people to work, play, and rest in balance (8 hours each).

I hope that during this holiday you remember to strive for balance. I know I will.

2. Question(s) for the Month

Do any of you know what percentage of lost pets actually make it back home?

Regarding last month’s request for book ideas: I didn’t get too many responses. However those that did take the time to write want me to release a training manual. I do have an idea in the works but wonder if I should combine the book with an audio or internet course. Anyway, thanks to those of you who took the time to give feedback.

3. Critter Chronicles:

I adore all my students and recently I’ve had the opportunity to work with more felines than usual. Multiple animal households often face different challenges. During some of the dog training
classes the cats have walked up to me and demanded to
participate in school.

One such client is Pumpkin. She was around when I trained the last family dog about 15 years ago. The new pup is learning quickly but on the third visit, Pumpkin decided she needed to enroll, too.

Normally unsociable, she began following me around. The fifteen year old feline came and sat next to me as I wrote up the notes. When our eyes met, I realized she really wanted to go to school and told her I would work with her after the next session.

In “What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons of Wild & Tame Creatures” (ISBN 1893361845) I discuss a similar episode from a time when I was training elephants. My colleagues ridiculed my
chatting with the large animals.

Anyway, to the cat owner’s amazement, she came over and demanded (meowed)her session as we neared the end of the dog training. The two animals were vying for my attention, so we moved into the kitchen, as it was
off limits to the dog and eliminated the competition over the trainer.

Pumpkin learned “sit” and “come” on command. Her owner laughed and shook her head in disbelief. I encouraged her to show off the cat’s prowess and left happy.

Most people dismiss the abilities of animals. Pumpkin really, really wanted the same opportunity as her canine pal. Mental stimulation and learning is fun for animals. The way I teach is fun and the animals love it, and love their teacher. This is super rewarding to me. If you work with a trainer or behaviorist, check to see how your animal responds. Happy anticipation says it all.
