Wow, October is already here along with weather changes. Can you believe that the end of the year is just around the corner?

Despite my best intentions, last month my goal to achieve balance went right out the window as the last two weeks of September proved hectic but rewarding.

Media earlier this month include appearance of the Today Show and Countdown with Keith Olberman. I did attempt to reach you right after we filmed the segment—it aired early the next day. I’ve had calls from some other shows and anticipate some more segments in the near future.

Sadly, Steve Irwin died early in September after a fatal bard stab by a large stingray. This incident just highlights how important it is to not take any animal for granted. Animals have teeth, claws, spines, horns, barbs, and other defense mechanisms. The incident is a reminder that no matter how innocuous animals seem, they can always pose a threat.

Not too long ago I traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to attend SuperZoo. This industry tradeshow highlights the newest in pet products. Groomers, pet retailers, manufacturers, and pet professionals from all over the world gather in one place.

Connecting with old friends was great. My favorite events were the private party held at the top of Mandalay Bay Hotel in the House of Blues Foundation room. The view from the top of the hotel was fabulous.

What really took me back to the early days of my career was the visit to Shark Reef, an aquarium at the Mandalay Bay featuring a variety of aquatic predators. My career path has been complex and I’ve done a lot of things—some of you may not know that I started my career as a marine naturalist and whale watch narrator. The visit to Shark Reef sparked a bunch of memories.

At SuperZoo the grooming contest always is spectacular. My favorite competitor this year creatively trimmed and colored, “dragon dogs.” I only saw the finale this year but it was fun.

2. Question(s) for the Month

Last month I asked if you knew what percentages of lost pets actually make it back home. Sadly only between 10-15% of those animals make are returned. Did you know that of all the Hurricane Katrina animals lost that only 15% have been returned to date?

I mention this because simple steps can help get your pet back to you if it gets lost. The best solution is to make sure your pets always have ID Tags on their collars—even if they are indoor only critters. During travel, tags should also include the numbers of friends or your cell phone. Local registration with animal control is a must--and useful to those finding your pet.

In addition to physical tags, it also helps to have your pet microchipped. The implantation can be done by veterinarians or animal shelters. The small chip is injected under the skin on the neck. You’ll want a universal chip that can be picked up by most scanners. If a pet is lost, the rice sized ID can be picked up by scanning devices at the shelter or animal services facility.

3. Critter Chronicles: Halloween Pets

The American Pet Products and Manufacturers Association states that over 3.7 million dog owners purchase gifts or costumes for pets specifically for Halloween festivities. These beastly celebrations are becoming mainstream and pet friendly Halloween parties and parades are a just part of a larger big trend.

Today pet families include their dogs in ‘Howl-o-ween’ celebrations and cats participate in ‘Yowl-o-ween’ events. Not too long ago there were only a half a dozen pet costumes available. Today Rubie’s Costumes of New York, the world’s largest costume manufacturer, has a pet collection that offers over 40 different designs.

Halloween can be a frightening and risky holiday for pets but Halloween celebrations can be safe and fun for pets if people are prepared. There are choices today that didn’t exist ten years ago.

Although some pets might like to dress up and participate in events, many more have adverse reactions. Pets can get very frightened by costumes and other unusual activities surrounding the Halloween celebrations. Constant door knocking, bell ringing, and unusual appearing guests can stress pets or spook them. This can contribute to escape or aggression. Need some Halloween Pet Safety Tips?

-Keep animals confined on Halloween. Seclude them safely in a room away from the door and distractions.

-Walk pets before dark to avoid any altercations with costumed characters.

-House animals indoors just before and during Halloween. This protects pets from pranksters who tease, injure, steal, or kill animals.

-Make sure pets are wearing current identification. Many pets get spooked and escape. Unfortunately they end up in shelters without identification.

-Keep pets away from costumed ghouls and goblins. Halloween bites are not uncommon. Even friendly animals may bite due to stress, fear, or protective aggression.

-Store and dispense candy so that it is not accessible to pets. Many treats are toxic and even lethal to pets.

-Avoid the liability that comes from dressing up your pet and sending the critter out trick-or-treating with kids.

-Don't dress up pets unless they love it. If you do dress them up make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. Avoid restriction of movement, vision, hearing or the ability to breathe or vocalize. Costumes should not contain small dangling accessories that could be consumed or cause choking.

-Restrict your pet's access to decorations. Jack o'lanterns with candles are obvious fire hazards, but cats can also get tangled in streamers. Pets can also become ill from eating holiday decor.

Halloween can be fun for all members of your family but avoid scary stories by using pet precautions—and make it a Happy Howl-o-ween instead of a ghoulish experience for pets!
