Poem Artwork

at ninety-one
grown children
send no hallmark cards
but pay your bills
cleanse your garments
call obligation love
that's all well
and good for the surface
still pensions cannot
kiss your cheekbone
stroke your aged hand
hug your precious neck

I understand - it's strange how a person can go from a care-giver and breadwinner to a forgotten person cared for by total strangers. I've seen it happen to others and I feel that I could've done more...this poetry in some way applies to a lot of different people.

Thought provoking work, Thank you.

No, obligation does not replace a heartfelt hug, nor an honest display of love from human being to another. I love this poem. I know I'll read it many times.

it is sad.....and should really make one think

There's a vast difference between Obligation and Love; and you've penned a marvelous reminder, Cynth'ya.

I assume that this is not about you personally, but about the reflection on the government's pension cheque of how small it is and the reflection on the pensioners.

Sad, I think - when all you've worked for in your life, for your children and everything, and came to only getting a monthly cheque to scratch an itch.
