white dreamz

by Cynth'ya Lewis Reed — Read all 584 poems by Cynth'ya Lewis Reed

The title of this written work, much like the singer in the above photo, is not to imply that I am not happy with myself. This poem was based on a song created and produced by Allen Watty...details on the blog link at the end.

So in honor of Bing Crosby...hope all y'all have a very White Christmas (in the snowy sense of the word, not the "Euro-global/American Walmart mogul/Job Outsource capitalist fat cat" sense of the word.)

The photo accompanying this written work is the singer Allen Watty, who sings his music in the link following the poem. It is NOT for people who fear social change for equality... so if that applies to you, then consider that ample notice.

Poem Artwork

the holidays are here again
for just a little while...
and in each corner of each face
there seems to be no smile

for when my darkness enters
into retail stores so fair,
the eyebrows raise as if alarm'd
"what is she doing here?"

the profile of the holidays
is one without much change,
there is no wrong to witness
yet my blackness still seems

"strange"

so as the holidays go by
and new year marches in,
pray profiles of my melanin
no longer spur chagrin

Hear Allen Watty's song
"I wish that I were white"

On the flip side, here is a stunning anonymous piece called "The Black Prayer" that interestingly enough, came to my email TWICE when I'd deleted it after reading. (Gee ya' think God has email angels out there somewhere? Hope it blesses your knowledge of appreciating all people. We are all precious hues in "God's Grand Canyon of Creation." The white clouds, the red clay, the black earth, the brown mountains, the amber grain.)

The Black Prayer
(This is deep--
take your time)

Why Did You Make Me Black Lord
Lord .. Why did you make me black?
Why did you make someone
the world would hold back?
Black is the color of dirty clothes,
of grimy hands and feet...
Black is the color of darkness,
of tired beaten streets...

Why did you give me thick lips,
a broad nose and kinky hair?
Why did you create someone
who receives the hated stare?

Black is the color of the bruised eye
when someone gets hurt...
Black is the color of darkness,
black is the color of dirt.

Why is my bone structure so thick,
my hips and cheeks so high?
Why are my eyes brown,
and not the color of the sky?

Why do people think I'm useless?
How come I feel so used?
Why do people see my skin
and think I should be abused?
Lord, I just don't understand...
What is it about my skin?
Why is it some people want to hate me
and not know the person within?

Black is what people are "Labeled"
when others want to keep them away...
Black is the color of shadows cast...
Black is the end of the day.

Lord you know my own people mistreat me,
and you know this just ain't right...
They don't like my hair, they don't like my
skin, as they say I'm too dark or too light!

Lord, don't you think
it's time to make a change?
Why don't you redo creation
and make everyone the same?

God's Reply:

Why did I make you black? Why did I make you black?

I made you in the color of coal
from which beautiful diamonds are formed...
I made you in the color of oil,
the black gold which keeps people warm.

Your color is the same as the rich dark soil
that grows the food you need...
Your color is the same as the black stallion and
panther, Oh what majestic creatures indeed!

All colors of the heavenly rainbow
can be found throughout every nation...
When all these colors are blended,
you become my greatest creation!

Your hair is the texture of lamb's wool,
such a beautiful creature is he...
I am the shepherd who watches them,
I will ALWAYS watch over thee!

You are the color of the midnight sky,
I put star glitter in your eyes...
There's a beautiful smile hidden behind your pain...
That's why your cheeks are so high!

You are the color of dark clouds
from the hurricanes I create in September...
I made your lips so full and thick,
so when you kiss...they will remember!

Your stature is strong,
your bone structure thick to withstand the
burden of time...
The reflection you see in the mirror,
that image that looks back, that is MINE!

So get off your knees,
look in the mirror and tell me what you see?
I didn't make you in the image of darkness...
I made you in the image of ME!

I enjoyed reading this poem...I don't see change in the near future because the media tends to show the world an ugly look at "Black" America. We are America's most hated and the funny thing is we were breed to be faster, bigger and stronger now "they" hate us for the monster they helped create via slavery. I get the "look" alot here in the South. Praying for change...thanks

Cynth'ya this is beautiful and the prayer is one that should be recited to many over and over. How long before humans acknowledge each other and accept and respect each other for who and what they are? Wouldn't the world be much better off? Loved this piece...

Be safe,
Karen

This was hard for me to read as well. I have a prejudice against people who are Hispanic (mainly language barriers, not wanting to better themselves by learning our language instead of expecting us to learn theirs; I don't think this is very fair or right!!). Keep Karla and I in your prayers; we can't do this on our own! Thanks!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

Skin color, ethnicity, how you dress, etc. cause people to [oft times] jump to the wrong conclusion about that person. Wish I could say that I only look at the person for what he or she is, but sometimes I, too, jump to the wrong conclusion. Thank you for this kind reminder.

God bless you. Kathy

Amazing how shallow we see with imperfect eyes, that which is of Gods spirit and creation, Bless you sister! Jasmin Horst

Cynth'ya,

Painful to read, because it exposes my own prejudices...not against black people, against brownskin people (Hispanic)...I get very annoyed when I see a group of them coming into a store, speaking Spanish...I would think I was better than that. NOT BETTER THAN THEM. An eye-opening write, sadly penned.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
