MY GIRL
For Chris
She was only fourteen when we first met,
the prettiest girl I’d seen yet.
She said no, the first time I asked
and everyone knew she had me out classed.
But, I was persistent, and after a while,
she stopped frowning at me and started to smile.
After some prodding, she finally agreed
and I swore that one chance was all I would need.
We dated until a year after she’d finished school,
then I asked if she’d be willing to marry this fool.
She hesitated, but for just a short time,
then her eyes started to twinkle, making them shine.
We had very little, except for each other,
but we knew that we’d make it one way or another.
When you start with nothing you have nothing to lose
and it gave us the freedom to live life as we choose.
We lived as paupers for those first few years,
but we learned the meaning of “Blood, Sweat and Tears.”
Then, I got out of college and found better employment.
We added some class to our form of enjoyment.
We started a family, just like we’d planned.
Got a bigger house, then bought some more land.
We prospered some, though we were never rich,
but at least I wasn’t digging that same ol ditch.
Then, one day we discovered that we were in trouble.
Our world was crushed and it burst our bubble.
She had a lump, which they said wasn’t serious,
but before it was over we were pretty damn furious.
Doctors & hospitals and lots of medication.
Chemotherapy and rest, then finally radiation.
She fought like a trooper, but she never complained.
She didn’t want her family to suffer her pain.
We weren’t really religious, but we learned to pray,
hoping that a miracle just might come our way.
With all of my being I tried hard to believe,
that for someone this special, He’d grant a reprieve.
Church every Sunday, faith healers and all,
hoping that somehow, He’d answer our call.
Then as I stood there overlooking her casket,
I had a question for Him, but I never did ask it.
I no longer believe, though most think that I should.
Pray if you like, but it did us no good.
Church is a good thing for the comfort of friends.
But, upon death, I’m convinced everything ends.
Religion is for the living & if it helps you muddle through,
you have my blessing and I’m happy for you.
But, I believe that Heaven and Hell,,,, God and Jesus,
though very well intentioned, are only there to appease us.
