Oscar Dissent

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

My apologies, in advance, to anyone who enjoys the annual Academy Awards show. My views expressed in this poem are strictly my views and my views, alone. Feel free to disagree with them.

Poem Artwork

I am fed up with the Oscars
The show airs for far too long;
The revelry goes on forever
Pardon me, if I am wrong.
If a film is Oscar worthy,
I will buy the DVD;
But, the show sometimes has content
That I do not wish to see.

While the fashion sense is something
Meant for water cooler chat,
Is the show worth sheer exhaustion
For a mere moment like that?
Maybe I am just a cynic
But I do not see the sense,
In spending hours of our lifetimes
For something that lacks suspense.

Many times, the films are shoo-ins
Rarely is there a surprise;
Rarer still, when each speech begins
Are true tears in winners’ eyes.
Yet, I know many will gather
When next year’s show rolls around,
To bear the latest edition
Of this mania we’ve found.

I am fed up with the Oscars
Whether or not you agree,
While for some, they’re entertainment
They are tiresome to me.
So, I share with you, this promise
That I am destined to keep,
For the next Oscar awards show
I will be in bed, asleep!

This is cute. Unfortunately, I sit through it for the little moments like Clint translating Italian or Peter O'Toole's look when he lost. I get to see movies I never heard of and acts like those fantastic body sculptures.

I never watch T.V....it ALL bores me! HA! But...one the other hand, I have a son who is in college majoring in theatre, he called me yesterday to tell me he was almost in a fight!
I asked him what had happened and he said, he was watching the Oscars with other classmates and a group of loud and obnoxious kids came in, hoping to distract them enough in hopes they could gain use of the t.v set for something other than the Oscars.
My son is the most peaceful man you would ever want to meet. But~ not when it comes to his Oscars! He stood up to them and told them to be quiet and if they can't, they need to go somewhere else!
He said, 'Mom, I didn't think I had that in me!" All his friends stood there mouth agape, thinking he didn't either! HA! I guess it just depends on who's watching! Not me!...
(Well, maybe if my son is walking down that red carpet I might! :))
Love and Peace~

I watched some of it. Slept through a lot of it and woke up to hear what I had missed on the twelve o'clock news.

Yes, it is superficial but after all, they're only actors.
God Bless,
Lew

I was and will be for the works of the writers by the time it reaches film is usually so misconscrued as to become garbage to entice the unrealities that the pervs ask for. Good commentary on todays industry Jill.

I didn't even bother watching them (haven't for years). I find it highly pompous that an occupation should reward themselves with trophies once a year, who else would do that-but the rich and famous! Great job Jill, and I share your views wholeheartedly!
