I’m Sorry

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem about the most difficult expression we will ever utter in life -
I'm sorry.

Sunday, May 6, 2007

Poem Artwork

I’m sorry is the hardest phrase
We are required to say
No faster than the need is raised
More words get in the way
When genuine, this uttered pledge
Can bring an end to grief
Yet, pride can often form a wedge
Between guilt and relief.

When we are wrong, regret alone
Becomes a nagging pain
And, soon, we know we must atone
For our time of disdain
While rueful words may prove to be
Too little or too late
Our inner soul will hear our plea
Regardless of our fate.

I’m sorry is the hardest phrase
Our lives will ever know
Yet, from each shameful moment weighs
The chance for us to grow
If we admit to our mistakes
When we are incorrect
We may prevent our deep heartaches
And earn others’ respect.

This is so beautiful Jill. But for me this was not the hardest phrase, it was "I won't let you hurt me again" Lovely work as always.

Dear Jill,

Your poem is beautiful as always, painted with the colours of rhyme and rhythm. I have found that saying "I'm sorry", "I apologize" or "please forgive me" to be a profound relief to mind, body and spirit.

Love & Light always and in all ways,
Joseph*

Saying, "I'm Sorry," is truly hard to do especially if it is to someone who has really hurt you and you're trying to get back at them. I find though saying I'm sorry is much easier than the guilt lingering in my mind.

You are so right, Jill. Once we learn how to appologize, it does get easier but it requires placing our egos aside. In the long run, I find it easier to accept responsibility for something (even if I am not to blame) when someone is upset. It takes their "power of the fight" away, and makes it easier to smooth things over. I think that others know when they are out of line or flat out wrong and exercising a little grace under fire will usually make them admit to it, even if only to themselves, and I walk away feeling as though I did all in my power to ease the situation.
Take care,
Sherry

I agree with this one completely and too often, way to often we let it go beyond when it should be said and fate has a habit of interferring before we get the chance to offer it and make amends. If we are wrong and we know it we should set it right ASAP.
