I’d gone to a shop in D.C.
Just my dear beloved and me
He started to squirm
As if he’d seen a worm
Then, kneeled beneath the old oak tree.
His actions came as a surprise
Just as the fear found in his eyes
But, on one knee posed
He reached back for a rose
An action that was very wise.
Then, he called out for my hand
The one thing it seemed he had planned
I looked for the ring
He did not bring a thing
But, one miniscule grain of sand.
I’m sure I looked rather confused
And I was not at all amused
But, soon he explained
That one present remained
Even though the gift had been used.
“This grain is a symbol of life
O’er the years, it has seen much strife
But, still it has stayed
Through the tough times it prayed
Just as I pray you’ll be my wife.”
As the teardrops welled in my eyes
I was in for one last surprise
A ring from his Mother
Brought forth by his brother
Already in the perfect size.
Thus, ends my long day in D.C.
Just my dear fiancé and me
Now, we’ll look ahead
Toward the day we’ll wed
And share love for eternity.
