Today, upon our golden sands from sea to shining sea
A changing of the guard has come and so has history
Again, our nation eyes the chance to prosper and to grow
Despite the vast uncertainties so many of us know
Regardless of our home or race; regardless of our views
The future stares us in the face and brings amazing news
This day, Barack Obama shall become our President
Embracing hope, enriching dreams, and easing discontent.
The next four years will be unlike any our lives have known
The stakes are high as we undo the past’s bitter cyclone
From years of riding stormy seas and waves marred by regret
Our compass has shown us the way; the shore is in sight, yet
Life has no guarantees at all; change can be very slow
But, with our President’s support throughout each ebb and flow
In time, our nation will ascend much stronger than before
From the mountains to the valleys and the canyons to the shores.
This day, we pause to celebrate the grand red, white, and blue
Anticipating welcomed change and all that may ensue
When President Obama strives to undo years of sorrow
Thus, helping us to smile when we think about tomorrow
I pray that soon the current state of our nation will pass
I’m eager that life will return for the working, middle class
Just for today, I am quite pleased hope is within our sight
I hope my faith will last beyond Inauguration Night!!!
