The Skeptics' Dilemma

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

We all are seekers, and we all lose our way from time to time searching for life's meaning. Let us not overlook the gift of our own preciousness!

The Skeptics' Dilemma

Skeptics come, and skeptics go,
Their mantra being, "It 'ain't so!"
But deep within their hearts they know
That doubt alone is not enough,
That they are made of sacred stuff,
So, on they search for what rings true .

Truth is silent, so to speak,
If what is 'so' is what they seek,
Their minds must then in silence meek,
Submit themselves to spiritual realm,
And wrestle God who holds the helm,
And calms the storms that we create.

Drop anchor in this sea of doubt,
When our ship of life gets tossed about,
And our spirits writhe and scream and shout;
The rock of faith that lies below
Will aid the seekers of the 'so',
Will hold us firm, and calm our sea.

And so, it goes, in our to's and fro's,
In our hopeful highs, and our let-down lows,
In bursts of light and in dark shadows;
Doubts abound; we're bound to have them,
Searching waters we can't fathom,
We lose our grip on our preciousness.

We all are seekers of the 'so',
Searching for the deeper flow,
Hoping that someday we'll know.
Perhaps it's not so complicated,
Doubt is highly overrated,
Truth and love are 'so' related
Then so be it, for it is so.

It wears my brain out trying to write rhyming poetry.
You've mastered it quite well. It not only flows but
the message is powerfully intact. A super write!

An interesting viewpoint. While all things are possible and we can create many futures, we have to be realistic about the present and that's why I like skeptics because they often point out that, "that King that we adore has no clothes."

to sum up -- the thusness, so let it be. in a word, doubt is the mother of contradiction, which is forever but truth and love are always apart, by definition, as to the 'so,' the true truth is an attempt to speak out, not a silence, otherwise, how can it be gripped? Cheers, alex

You took on the skeptics, and pretty much had your way with them . . . I am of the opinion that we live our daily lives trying, (as you said) to figure out why things happen the way they do, and why they happen to them? I don't subscriber to the theory that ". . . God who holds the helm, / And calms the storms that we create." I don't criticize you for believing, however. Why are we here? Where are we going? Is there an after life? On the last of those questions I firmly believe in reincarnation. Have no firm proof of that, but, as people are wont to say, I have faith that it is true. Eh . . . Your poem sorta got me started, and that is a good thing. It caused me to search within myself.
