Stumbling Beautifully

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

With singing all around at this time of year, I am reminded of my mother's voice, of her fingers gingerly playing our old organ, and of the many times that she echoed the beginning words in this poem.

Stumbling Beautifully!

"I can't play anymore,
I can't sing anymore,
Oh please, please - don't ask me to play,
I've lost my voice,
I've lost my way."
"I've passed the torch along
I've given up my song,
I cannot carry one more line,
A doubting voice
Extinguished mine."

She used to make me smile,
Feel happy for awhile,
Why did she heed the doubt that said,
"You have no voice,
Your voice is dead."

She didn't know her sound,
Touched me in ways profound;
The times she soared are all a blur,
But I never felt such love for her,
As when she stumbled on a note.

This is absolutley beautiful, and I can relate to it very well,
because my wife used to have a lovely singing voice and played the guitar beautifully until she had to have an operation on her throat and could no longer sing, saddly she also stoppped playing the guitar because she couldn't sing along to the music.
this is an excellent poem, thank you for sharing it.
Steve.

My mother has aphasia, so she's hard to understand at times. But it's wonderful when she tells me something she thinks is funny and giggles. Childhood returns at 92.

I can just see you sitting all enthralled watching her play that organ and listening to her beautiful voice.
