Lament For Friendship

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

Life is both unpredictable and precious, and friendships to be cherished. It saddens me to witness the fraying of our very special friendship with our neighbour to the South. Let us pray that respect and healing will gain the upper hand for us all.

Lament For Friendship

What a sad thing,
When friends fall out,
And lose togetherness,
Becoming less;
When our common goals and aspirations
Become frayed - torn at the edges,
When talk is for show,
Fleeting bravado,
That weakens our bonds,
Leaves us struggling to cope,
Grasping at hope;

Why plant seeds of doubt,
What's this fear all about?
And what thanks do we send
To our struggling earth mother,
As we feign to defend
Each from the other;

What do we gain
By inflicting pain;
In the glare of 'beware!',
How do we repair?

'Neath the weight of our words,
Our hearts long for peace,
For hurts to be healed,
For struggle to cease;

Then, let our falling out be ended,
And hands of friendship be extended;
Around this world, our common home,
Let's build a wall of toleration,
Made up of every tribe and nation's
Hands joined together in respect and love;
That would be a wall
That we could all get behind.

Unfortunately, many believe that thrusting up walls and isolating ourselves is the answer to our insecurities. Glad you and I share another vision.

I just read that Trump is now going to the inauguration of the new Mexican president to glad hand him, tell him that he is "great" or even, "stupendous." What a mockery of friendship!

Enjoyed your poem. The last stanza summed it up beautifully. We really need a leader who can unite instead of dividing us.

Loved your poem. It's important to "reach out" and continue to gain new friends throughout the years. Some friends are "timeless" and others are but for a season. But as is everything in life, there is a divine reason. Amen!

A heartfelt write with sentiment (I'm sure) many will relate to. My life's path (so far) is littered with broken friendships. Friendships that burgeoned successfully for a season and then withered and died. As to America's controversial borders and morally devolving society: a new civil war has gripped the USA. There's no going back now. Hopefully everyone will have at least one friend they can depend on. Peace... r
