A Literary Lull

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

For all of you trying to share your own artistic or writing gifts with others, I encourage you to just start with one word, one line, one doodle at a time. In my case, I worked out my frustrations by writing a literary doodle, a little poem that you can probably relate to.

A Literary Lull

Hello page -
It's me again,
I've had another coffee;
But all it did was make me shake,
No inspiration in its wake,
No powerful ripples for me;

So, I'm back
To think and sigh,
Heavy head and heavy heart,
Filled with words that won't leave home,
Hanging on, afraid to roam,
Lest faults they might impart;

For words have power
To hurt or heal,
And that is no small matter,
And so, In matters literary,
Some re-write is necessary,
But first - I need to start!

They say the trick is to just write. To just write anything Sometimes that works for me, but there are many times when my muse remains stubborn, and refuses to show up. There are times like that when I'll pull out something I had written previously, and try to make it better.

We all have a certain fear of writing the wrong thing or even not writing anything of any consequence in our poetry. I know I have that. But I've grown rather thick-skinned and find that so many simply do not read well and have misinterpreted what I write anyway. Sometimes it's better to write controversy. Infamy is as good as fame when it comes to becoming well known. And infamy is often easier to obtain.

I like the idea of doodling a poem. So I just start writing like I'm doodling on the edge of a serious subject. Some of my best stuff comes from random starting like that. I was having trouble with my poem for Saturday. About 15 minutes after I struggled to finish it before another review tomorrow, I thought of another poem and wrote it quickly for next week. So next week I won't even have to think… Thank goodness… That poem is already in the bag.

Not everyone who reads our poetry and stories is going to be an experienced poet and critic. Best thing to do is to write from your heart and allow the words to flow out. Somebody, somewhere, will be connecting with your words and will appreciate what you write.

Don't look for being an expert in poetry. Once you are perfected, or once people "think" that you are perfect, there's really no room for you to grow and have fun when you write. Always leave yourself some rooms to grow and explore. As long as people think you are not perfect yet, they are more than happy to help you.

Love the poem. me? I was hiding from reality, because I was positive my poetry could never live up the masters. I was totally out of my mind. Then one day something came over me, who cared if I could never live up to the masters of poetry? I found Authors Den and send them a poem, and the response I received blew me away. The poem of yours gave me some reflection of that DAY. Thank you.
