A New Year's Serenity Prayer

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

The New Year has put its foot firmly down and is heading, with cautious hope, towards that light at the end of the tunnel. These days it seems that Hope's GPS is sending us off onto some pretty rough side roads. Though we would like them to be short cuts, the truth is that the journey has to be taken, one step at a time, past murky bogs of division, guilt, and fears, onto paths of kindness and selflessness, where our candles will be relit and we will reach our goal of hope and healing.

A New Year's Serenity Prayer:

Lord help me to accept that there are things that I cannot change, and help me to set down that heavy excess baggage.

Grant me courage to change the things that I can, one small act at a time, starting with an encouraging smile to the unsure one who looks back at me from the mirror each morning.

Grant me the wisdom to know the difference; that our search for true happiness must begin, and will be realized, by way of simple acts of giving without thought of return.

May I be a true friend for others by giving generously of the gift of kind humour, and by offering healing laughter, in the face of their fears.

May this little child, as I raise my arms up in trust, be enfolded in Your amazing grace—a force more powerful than any virus, hatred, sadness or fear.
