Do You Hear What I Hear?

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" has always been one of my favourite Christmas carols, with its reflective invitation to listen quietly amid the busyness of our everyday lives to the message of hope that we all desperately need to hear. Our world is bombarded daily with the notes of fear and mistrust, anger and judgement; a discordant symphony of negatives. In contrast, there is another melody being offered daily; each note the sound of a healing kindness performed; let's turn up the volume on that playlist - —every note counts.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

'Dance, then where-ever you may be
I am the lord of the dance', said he
And I lead you all, where-ever you may be
And I lead you all in the dance, said he'
- Sydney Carter, 1963

The lord of the dance truly leads us in steps not always predictable,
choosing to change rhythm when we least expect it;
throwing us off balance, momentarily,
while we try to catch up and get in step again;

The aim of the dance, of course, is to be an expression of joy!
a means of reveling in the music that is playing all around us;

If at times, we close our eyes in a moment of exhaustion, or discouragement,
and find ourselves lost,
we need only take a good look at our hands;
we never dance alone—we have a constant partner holding them,
and what a dancer He is!

His firm but gentle touch leaves an impression in our hands;
the beautiful traces of kindnesses that He has led us to perform;

And when we take the initiative to show him new steps,
to a new melody that has touched our spirit with joy,
that we sincerely want to share with Him and with others,
He is delighted to' hear what we hear,'
To join our dance!
