Only a Blink Away
I took myself for a walk today,
Just I and me for company;
A quiet walk, a quiet talk,
We strolled, though unattentively,
Gathering friends along the way,
Squirrels and chipmunks had their say,
A curious mix of chirp and squeak,
Wise, I’m sure, in nature-speak,
A carefree bright refrain;
Curiously, they followed me,
While sparrows offered melody;
With joyous shout,
Their song rang out:
Take a moment,
Slow your stride,
Gather joy from the wonder side!
The sun is shining,
The clouds are bright,
Don’t miss the chance
To savour this sight,
For its end
Is only a blink away—
It will never come ‘round again.

You made me wish to be able to walk like that among the wild creatures again. But that was a blink of an eye ago and now I watch them from my window. There is one squirrel that comes occasionally as though he knows us and seems to ask permission to eat the nuts we put out for him. Strange, how we can communicate with a creature of entirely different nature than us. The joy of nature that most people ignore in their busy lives. That can be gone in a blink of an eye.
Last Saturday, my caregiver/partner fainted while feeding me some cake that she baked and fell backward on our tile floor, hitting her head rather hard. Fortunately, she was only sore from the bump on her head and a stiff neck when it could've been much worse. I depend on her several times a day and night to keep me alive and surviving, thriving. Just her going to the hospital or the emergency room would put my life in a spiral that would be hard to survive from.
It is, but for a blink of an eye, that our lives continue.
