Arriving early, Mark had chosen a table
Facing the front of the restaurant
Eagerly awaiting Vanessa's arrival,
His eyes were glued to the front door
When Vanessa entered the room
He was aware of the subtle turning
Of heads and the soft murmur of appreciation
As she walked slowly to his table, never
Taking her eyes off the man before her.
Dressed in seafoam green, the silken texture
Of her dress molded her body like a well worn glove
Her glossy red hair, worn in a Veronica Lake
Style, enhanced the countours of her face
Falling gently to her lovely shoulders.
After ordering drinks and selections were made
From the menu, they relaxed and enjoyed the
The candelit room and casual ambience
Of their fellow diners.
Discussing everything from the weather to
The political arena and the state of the economy,
Mark soon realized that the woman before him
Was not just a gorgeous beauty, but a woman
Of considerable knowledge and substance.
Talking about their careers, he asked her if she was
A model? Possibly a movie star who had chosen
The silver screen as her goal in life?
Laughing, she answered "no... not at all."
She confessed that she was a biochemist who
Loved the career path she had chosen.
"A biochemist? I thought they were all fusty old codgers
With accumulated dust on their glasses, wearing
Argyle sweaters and plaid trousers!"
Mark wasn't sure if he was giddy on the wine or
The fascinating woman who was his dinner companion
But he did know this beauty was capturing his heart
And that his hormones were were reaching an all time high!
He knew that evening, as he felt the winds of change
Blow across his reluctant heart, that no other woman
Would affect him the way Vanessa did.
Mark suspected he had found the woman who would
Complete him, possibly to become his wife.
The jagged edge of reality thrust deeply into his core,
Ripping through his pre-conceived notions
Of remaining a confirmed bachelor; his resistance
Ebbing away like the pacific tide fleeing from a sandy beach.
