©PHILLY

A Poem by Myra Wexler Darwish

I’ve walked her cobblestoned streets

 And historic byways,

With loving footsteps

 That respected always

Those who had trodden before me.

I have been nurtured by Philly’s cultured air.

On Rodin, on science in her museums,

On history and art,

On books both old and new,

Waiting for me to read in old, musty outdoor stalls.

I’ve rode her trolleys, subways, and buses,

The links that helped me to get where I needed to go.

To schools, to shopping, to family,

To feed my spirit

 To maintain my freedom.

Her sensory experiences were like no other.

The sticky, acrid smelling streets of summer,

The softened air of a warm autumn day,

The children’s cold, rosy cheeks after a walk in the snow,

The buds freshly bursting on the maples in early spring.

Philly has nurtured my soul,

 My body/mind and spirit.

Rich in the kind of character

That molds precious memories in the heart,

Long after one has moved on.

Excellent write...I used to live in Northeast, well, in and around the Frankford neighborhood...used to be able to ride my bicycle all the way down Frankford ave into the city proper (couldn't do this anymore as the people there would kill you for a cigarette let alone a bicycle)...used to work downtown getting off at 3am and riding the "El" home...walked all around the city back in the early 80s & still, every now and then I venture over into the city from my home in Glassboro, NJ...very enjoyable write that brought back great memories, thanks...ed

A great tribute to a great city. My few visits left me with sparse memories of the zoo on a very hot Easter day. Of Independence Hall and how small it was and the cracked Liberty Bell. And leaving the city after a fruitless job interview in rush hour with a cop on every corner directing three lanes of traffic north (my way out of town) and only one south, courtesy of your infamous "law and order" mayor (I forget his name). And the wasted housing space along the beautiful Schuylkill River taken up by cemeteries.

and it's the home of Joe Frazier, one of the all time greats. A real life "Rocky".

Nice poem about Philly. I love the place! One question though. Why did the move the Rocky statue? Yes, it means a lot to me even if it's not considered a piece of art. Thank you.
