THE MOUNTAIN
A celebratory poem by, Myra Wexler Darwish & Maurice Z Darwish
In honor of their 60th wedding anniversary, 7/23/2021
There are mountains
Whose peaks cannot be seen from below,
Yet climbers courageously make their ascent.
Our life began that way,
Looking up, strong and hopeful, never halting.
Our backpacks held our unique cultures;
Differences became our strengths,
Woven into the fabric of our lives.
A first child, a second, a third…life was full,
And our tapestry became more beautiful.
The joy of family sustained us,
Like a golden tonic that is savored
For its healing properties.
Parents and children filled our hearts with pride,
And lifted us along the way.
Our family grew,
A new son, two new daughters,
A grandchild, a second, a third.
Love never left our side,
Along the crags and crevices of our journey.
Hope and strength
Gave us the lift we needed.
Family accomplishments
Buoyed us, and
Smoothed our path ahead.
Our journey, now shortened by time,
Sees the mountain’s peak.
That little tapestry we started weaving
Those sixty years ago,
Has turned into something we deeply treasure.
A testament to our love for each other, and
All the choices we have made.
In loving support; we begin this last part of our climb,
Knowing that when we reach the summit,
We will have created a lasting work of art!
