When Dime Stores had Ice Cream

Take me back to the beginning
of our times together-when jazz singers
sang on lonely street corners
and the train’s whistle comforted our thoughts
It was a different life then…
like the old Norman Rockwell paintings
where we sat kissing at drive-ins
and ice cream parlors were in dime stores
I can still hear the guitars strumming
and see old carnivals with Ferris wheels
It made our love seem like it was forever
when you held my hand in yours…
Remember the wood bridges that we walked across
and the wishes we made with our pennies
We made plans to get married back then…
After you returned from the war
You changed somehow when you got back
Life was no longer a challenge to you
and love was only there for comfort
and you wanted me to move to Boston…
You see, I still think about you…
You were my first and only love back then
Time whisked you away from my life
like the harsh winds in a passing storm…
